It’s the 2nd longest continuous CFB played at the FBS level at 112-straight meetings (and 115 overall). And this year’s meeting won’t determine who will win the ACC Atlantic Division (like last year) but could go a long way toward keeping the winning team’s Orange Bowl berth bid alive…presuming Clemson wins out, that is.

Last year’s game ended a 45-42 barn burner with Wake Forest the victor, giving them 4 of the last 5 matchups.

It’s a rivalry series that started in a 4-4 tie game, and once even saw at game’s end a full, five-minute long brawl with players brandishing nose guards, head gear, fists, and any sort of weapon found at hand…only for the ENTIRE CROWD TO DESCEND UPON THE FIELD TO JOIN IN (and amidst all the madness, a someone stole a pistol from a Wake Forest (the city, not the school) Police Officer!)

Once ACC-Darkhorse NC State lost starting QB Devin O’Leary for the year, but hope to have found his replacement for the rest of the season in Freshman MJ Morris. After a decent performance in a comeback win versus (2-6) Virginia Tech last week, NC State hopes his play balances with their stout defense (top 15 in points allowed) enough to shut down Wake Forest’s high scoring offensive attack.

Meanwhile, Wake Forest comes off an absolute meltdown of a game last week, reeling from the constant defensive line pressure from Louisville blowing up their slow mesh spread option. But pretty much any offensive performance tonight has to be better than 6 turnovers in a single quarter, right?

This is only the 3rd time both teams have been ranked coming into their yearly meeting (out of 119 games). Wake Forest is favored by 3 but the ESPN FPI gives NC State a 59% chance.

NC State gets on the board first, following a Sam Hartman interception with a 33-yard FG to make it 3-0 NC State with 8:04 left.

Wake Forest is trying to do its best Tennessee impression today. 3 false starts in the first 12 minutes as a result of all the stadium noise.

Wake Forest gets down to the NC State 1, but the NC State defense forces them backwards on two straight running plays and eventually forces them to kick a 34 yard field goal following a 9-yard sack of Sam Hartman.

Edit: I typed this too early. The 35-yard FG is wide, still 3-0 NC State after Wake Forest starts at the State 30.

TD Wake Forest. Following a pass interference in the endzone, Christian Turner runs it in from 2 yards out to make it 7-3 with 10:19 left in the 2nd quarter.

Something tobacco related? The battle for the spittoon. The ashtray bowl. The Prince Albert Trophy.

A vicious hit but he holds on. TD NC State makes it 10-7 NC State with 7:39 left in the half after a 6 play, 71 yard drive.

Beautiful catch on the 24 yard catch for the TD. 14-10 Wake Forest with 4:11 left in the half.

Sam Hartman now ties Philip Rivers in ACC history career TD passes at 95.

The freshman’s athleticism just keeps things going. MJ Morris completes a 13-yard TD pass to make it 17-14 NC State with 1:30 left in the first half.

NC State is playing the same type of offensive clock management that Georgia used in the second half against Tennessee today.

It’s only their first drive and it’s already halfway through the 3rd quarter.

They took the lead and now they’re milking the clock as much as they can.

Beautiful throw and catch to make it 24-14 NC State with 6 minutes left in the 3rd.

State had one drive this half and it ate up almost half of the 3rd quarter.

Wake Forest goes for it on 4th and 11 and Hartman throws a 2nd interception that’s returned to the 50.

8 picks now in 2 games.

51-yard FG makes it 27-14 NC State with 2:01 left in the 3rd quarter.

This quarter NC State has had the ball for 10 minutes. Wake Forest’s offense has only seen the ball for 3 minutes.

And Sam Hartman throws a 3rd interception.

Wake Forest has regressed back to Wake Forest.

When’s the last time a team made it into the top 10 in October and ended the season 6-6/7-5?

Guess the game’s not over. Wake Forest has a 13-play, 99-yard drive (going for it twice on 4th down and getting each) end in a 29-yard TD toss to make it 27-21 NC State with 6:54 left in the game.

That’s probably going to do it. Wake Forest not only can’t stop Morris, they help NC State get inside the 10 with a late personal foul.

It only turned into a FG but with less than 3 minutes left, a 9-point deficit and no timeouts kills this game and any major bowl hopes the Demon Deacons had.

Incomplete. That’s game. And thus thanks to a freshman QB, that will be the last we ever see of ranked Wake Forest.

30-21 NC State final.

The Triangle Effect.

NC State keeps its Orange Bowl dreams alive…is what I would be saying had Clemson not gotten humiliated. At best now, NC State and everyone else is probably playing for the Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando.

Wake Forest, meanwhile, in two weeks has gone from inside the top 10 to unranked in 2 weeks. Clawson and the Demon Deacons went from being in the running for the school’s second ever New Years 6 bowl bid to the ACC’s general pool of bowls

…and since they were in the Gator Bowl last year, that pretty much means - as the smallest ACC brand and fanbase - the conference offices will probably ship them off to New York (Pinstripe) or Boston (Fenway).

what has the city of Wake Forest have to do with Wake Forest University? Wake Forest, NC houses a Baptist Seminary

Wake Forest isn't in The Triangle, BTW...not since 1956

I also thought about the moniker Tar Heel State Showdown.

You are right about Wake Forest not being in the Triangle and i was just considering that moniker when North Carolina State is the home team.
