May have just done the Vols a favor last night by chanting Bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do…? Wayne Chism and company certainly showed the 49ers what we were gonna do! I suggest that the revamped Vols adopt Bad Boys as a new team moniker. The theme song is already written. If we adopt it as our own, it would prevent future opponents from using it against us as the Charlotte faithful tried to do (unsuccessfully). I like the idea of “Bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do when we come for you?” being in the heads of opposing players as the Vols come to town. I also would like hearing it played over the PA system in T-B arena during warmups to remind future victims of just how “bad” these Vols can be. We could finish it off with Michael Jackson’s Who’s Bad?! I think this affords us a great opportunity to turn a negative into a positive. The game coming up on Sunday against Kansas would be a great time to introduce our new “theme song” since KU’s players got themselves into a lot of hot water in the pre-season fighting with the football players. T-B arena will be full of “bad boys”. :boxing2:

Once we get our football team up to speed, the theme song would sound just as imposing over the Neyland Stadium loudspeakers.

I see what you're saying, but I think it's actually the kind of image UT needs to DISTANCE itself from, not EMBRACE.

I take your point, fellas, but the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Boston Celtics, New York Yankees, UCLA Bruins, or other dynastic teams of the past never got anywhere calling themselves the Nice Guys or the Choir Boys. I will concede, however, that the Saints have done pretty well lately, but they're an exception to the rule. In the world of sports, nice guys finish last. Manly men need manly nicknames. I say, take the bull by the (horns) and run with it! Bad Boys ain't exactly super-macho, but it beats nothing and I would prefer to see the Vols take a more aggressive approach to being taunted by opposing fans. Passivity will only make us look weak.

Are you kidding me? The University is in the midst of trying to revamp our image and you think we should make the theme song to COPS a part of our program?

Uh..........John Wooden was probably one of the nicest, classiest, and best men ever to coach any sport in the NCAAs. Considering he wouldn't let Walton play until he got a haircut, I don't think he'd go for a "bad boy" image.

Lombardi's Packers maybe a bit moreso (a bit), but I think he'd rather qualify to knock the crap out of you rather than to be a "bad boy". Tough doesn't equal "bad boys".

Both of those guys were also perfectionists that demanded execution and sound fundamentals.

As for the Yankees.....yup, Jeter, Rivera, all of them, total thugs.

John Wooden was, and still is, a nice guy, but I remember how physically his Bruins played in their heyday. They weren't exactly playing "flag basketball" out there on the court. As to the Packers, no one could argue that they were gentle with their opponents. I don't follow baseball in the modern era, so I couldn't tell you who's bad and who's not nowadays. I was referring to the Yankees of times gone by.

Nah, he was too busy turning a blind eye to Sam Gilbert buying his teams for him.

Don‘t take my point too seriously. The tone is jocular, not nuclear. It’s my response to fans of opposing teams trying to get under the skin of our boys with rude chants or other derisive comments. I’m not saying the Vols should adopt the mien of the street thug. That’s what got our notorious “four stooges” in trouble. Fortunately, the players we have left don’t seem to be that stupid. Bad Boys itself is a rather juvenile term, but the, rather humorous, theme song does have a hook that’s hard to get out of your head once it gets in there. I’d rather have such a thing work for us than against us. The nouveau gangster mindset is one that can work against us if we let it. By making it our own, we can show the world that we don’t take it seriously and make it work in our favor. I’m not suggesting that my idea should become official UT policy, or that our players should adopt a “gangster“ attitude. By making Bad Boys our own, we highlight the humor of the whole situation while suppressing the criminal aspects of such a name. It wouldn’t hurt our players to be aggressive rather than passive in response to the derision of opposing teams and their supporters, lest the Vols be seen as being easily cowed by opposing fan bases. Thumbing your nose at detractors is as American as apple pie. So is irreverence.

I understand that your tone may be "jocular" but I don't really find it funny, and the way to respond is to dominate on the court, as we did last night. Trust me, I'm all about quality humor but I'm personally tired of the thug mentality (or perceived thug mentality) that permeates our public perception and overshadows the vast majority of our student athletes who are good kids. You don't have to have a "gangster mindset" to play with intensity.
