My friend is a college professor teaching in a criminal justice department. He asked for my help with this....

I was thinking about something and wanted your opinion. If you were going to design the ideal system/institution, etc. to control people, what would it have to include? Give it some thought and send me your ideas. I'm interested to see what you come up with.

I believe no matter what that it's a futile endeavor, so I don't know how honest or helpful I can be with my response. What do y'all think?

The first thing that came to mind is you have to have a way to control information.

Edit: My friend is clarifying that it doesn't have to be politically related. It's more abstract than that. It could be controlling your children, a classroom, a fan base, etc.

An illusion of transparency would make people think you were more truthful than you actually were and draw people into what you say, thus making you more likely to control a segment or population of people.

An example of this would be North Korea.

Pick a fight with someone, blame it on a minority group, send the boys off to war, the women to the factories...patriotism, nationalism and racism is the key to ultimate control.

To control someone's actions as completely as possible, you must first control their beliefs, assumptions and preconceptions.

A good dose of brainwashing from as early an age as possible would be good.

Make sure that the subject(s) feels that any thought outside of approved thoughts is wrong and is a mistake by the subject.

Teach that conformity is paramount.

Teach invalid logic structures and techniques. Rely heavily on anecdotal evidence when giving proofs. If a counter-thought enters the discussion that cannot be factually or logically disproven, then attack the source of the thought and treat such attacks as attacks on the validity of the thought.

Teach that pain is always the result of wrong-thinking. Create scenarios to prove this.

Use random and capricious punishments, even when no wrong-thinking occurs. Then blame the subject for not understanding what was done wrong. This reinforces a lack of confidence in the subjects own perceptions.

Rely heavily on phrases that easily stick in your head. A thought does not have to be well-developed or very complete as long as it has rhythm, rhyme, repeatability.

Discourage the use of 'I' and encourage 'We'.

Teach a fear of 'the other'.

I could think of others if I kept trying, but this topic disgusts me.

control the kids and it will eventually fall into place. Government "schools" are a good start

Dependency is the mechanism. There are different avenues to dependency. Power is generally viewed as the opposite of dependency and there are several forms of recognized power (coercive, legitimate, etc.). (Power/dependency theory).

There is no one signal approach to control people. However, if you can make them dependent (through various approaches) on you then you have the lever.

1 - Feed an endless stream of propaganda to the populace in such a way that they don't realize they are being propagandized

2 - Give them stuff/make them dependent

If we are talking about a large populace I think that the best way to acheive total control is to instill fear, and never let off.

If you want to control classrooms I think it becomes more difficult because children are not advanced in their emotional prowess enough to cover up their emotions. Emotions lead to loss of control. You have to control childrens emotions to control a classroom. This doesnt neccessarily mean that you have to control it with an iron fist. It is shown that positive emotions during a significant event garner greater memory. Again control the emotion and you have control of the memory recall in a child.

Control of a fanbase such as VN??? Only Freak can answer that.

Since I am on my way to your place, you mind giving me a preview of your place? Perhaps an itinerary of what my average day will entail?
