Not sure how many VNr's saw it - I have no choice since I live in the heart of GotTwelvanian. It was broadcast on every conceivable media including projection onto the cloudy sky.

Impresssions:

Overall rating? A-

He was very motivational, said the right things and has the attitude you want an HC to have. Bama fans are swooning based on what he said (I would be to).

The only downside was how he handled the leaving Miami questions. (For the record, he only got 2 questions about this and both were tame - I'm sure most Miami press were banned from the PC).

He claimed that his agent first told him that Bama was interested after the Indianapolis game (last week)!! Sure Nick, I believe you that no one from Bama contacted your agent prior to the end of the NFL season!

Later he talked about the importance of integrity! I know coaches have to lie about this stuff but just once I'd like to hear an honest answer - especially if integrity is going to be your calling card.

All that aside, he will be good at Bama.

Hearing him made me think it's time for a change on old Rocky Top

The Saban stuff aside, I'm struck by how many devoted folks have come to this same place this week, Bham. I don't recall another time, not even after the season in Hell, when so many staunch supporters' thinking has turned so quickly. This is a moment I think, that I will look back on as the momentum shifter.
It is an odd feeling for me.

I agree, I've been a mild supporter of PF. I just wonder more and more if he has the fire needed to compete at the highest level.

A different way of thinking about it. When you competitors refresh with fiery, motivated new coaches you are always against someone that is hungrier than you. It's irrelevant if they burn fast and quick, they are still hungrier.

i agree. it's the old "gotta keep up with the Jones'" mentality people just have.

having said that...im a lot closer to the get rid of fulmer side than i have ever been.

it's just getting harder and harder to ignore what keeps happening in big games, against some of these coaches that it seems everyone else is hiring.

two things that have just pissed me off about Fulmer, even when i truly felt he was "safe". 1. He lost to Ron Zook 1st time out. 2. He's 0'fer against Urban Meyer. For a guy to be the Dean of SEC coaches, to let two rookies come in and beat you at your own game was really frustrating.

and the frustration just keeps coming back over and over again....and again, it's not that we lost the PSU game, it's how we lost it. out coached, under prepared, blah, blah, blah....there have been more of those in recent memory than the opposite, that i can't argue anymore.

If Tennessee could find a coach that could come into Knoxville and take things back up to that higher level right off, I'd be all for it. The perfect example would be Bruce Pearl. However, Tennessee basketball is not anywhere close to Tennessee football. Pearl had a lot of room to work.

I try not to defend Fulmer on this board because I don't think he really deserves it at this point, but some people make such ridiculous comments and I have to say something.

Fulmer has been great for the overall program from the business end to the football end, but if he doesn't get it together next year and at least get us to the SECCG, I'm all out. Right now I see him as a little too old fashioned.

The SEC is now loaded with great younger coaches that aren't afraid to use every square inch of their playbook.

+1 (although I still disagree with you politically :) )

I really like CPF as a person and even as a head coach, to an extent. It has been hard for me over the course of the last 2 months to admit that I think his time is over. Obviously when we talk about him leaving, it's not realistic to think it would happen because we say it should. However, I will be upset when he leaves, not because I'm upset to lose a solid coach, but because we'll all know he didn't want to. He loves this program as much as anybody and he bleeds orange as much as anybody. It will be hard on him when it happens, and for that I will be sad. However, if he goes after an average 2007 season, a lot of fans, probably MOST, will remember him in a good light, and he can live in UT lore with the other legends. If he leaves on his own nasty terms in say .... 2011, with 0 SEC Titles since 1998, then his legend will be tarnished.

I like the man, I think he's charming, in the Southern gent way, and I think he gives 100% of his heart to Tennessee. I hope when he leaves as the head coach, he leaves in a manner that will allow all of us to remember him well, and consider him a reason Tennessee is one of the best football programs in America.

Wow. Word for word on how I feel about where we are at as a program. Good post.
