I had not thought this was an option- but it appears “An Ohio State” is making player by player decisions with their outgoing portal guys and going to allow some of them to play.

I feel like this would be super awkward- but I know they are dying for OL depth and that could be who they want to keep for the only playoff game they get to play.

For our Vols- if that’s an option - is it good riddance to these guys? Or would you want to let anyone play?

Jalen might be handy to have for a deep playoff run- and of course Dameron. But it might be more of a negative than positive.

Spillman is back ready to go, so he will take Jalen's minutes. Mathews has already taken Webb's minutes. J. Matthews and Lang aren't seeing the field anyways unless there is a complete disaster.
Jalen Smith is the only player we need to convince to play. But in reality if a player is starting the next semester at another school they won't have time to play in more than the first playoff game.

As long as the team is cool with it, I think they should be allowed to travel. They've been part of the team all year. The timing of the portal stuff is just weird, but I don't know how you fix it. Classes start in January.

When I saw your thread title I was already thinking this should be a player-by-player decision.

Some guys might want to prove their worth to the staff they're leaving. Good motivation.
Some guys might want to prove their value in the portal market. Good motivation.

But some guys, who might have had other reasons for leaving, might not have the right mindset to "give their all for Tennessee" four more times.

The staff should know, and I'd have absolutely zero reasons to not trust them.

Back before the portal became as disruptive as it seems to be now, Emory Jones entered the portal and played the entire bowl game for UF.

Could the portal date potentially be moved in the future to after the CFP?

Need Spillman. Our LB group will be nasty next year.

Why? The problem is that the playoff stretches another 10-12 days into the spring semester (if you’re in the finals). So you kinda have to decide if you want to play spring football for a new school or not.

If they have been good locker room guys and you trust them then I am for it. They have every motivation to showcase their skills on that stage and increase their value. However, they also run a huge risk of doing the opposite of they suffer a serious injury. Usually I am of the belief that if you're going, go on and go, but I'd see room for exceptions.

I was thinking if a team has major injury issues that affects depth at a position.

^^^^ exactly .

No new team would hold it against a player for staying here thru the playoffs either. 4 of these guys above play regular minutes and were being counted on for the playoffs.

If some guys quit on my multi million dollar project a couple weeks before the job was over, it would be a dickmove...and they would never get a good reference for future employment. Because they quit at crunchtime. When they were needed most. Lets quit acting like this is any different. It isnt.
