Time For College Athletes To Pay Taxes

Then you’ve got to 1099 every student on any type of scholarship. That’d go over like a fart in church.
So are regular students going to get a check? Not unless Oprah shows up.

If a academic student does a coop program that money is taxed. Why not the privileged athletes?

students do pay taxes on stipends. I assume the athletic stipends are taxable although it's doubtful that most of the people receiving one bother to report it since the school does not have to pay SS or medicare taxes on it. Maybe 10 years down the road the IRS figures it out and by then interest and penalties will cost 20x more than the amount received and maybe you can pay a lawyer half of what you owe to get it reduced by 25%.

Because money paid through a co-op is income. Scholarship money is not. Besides, there are non athletes getting room and board, meals and academic support other than athletes. It’s not like there are just 85 students on the whole campus who aren’t paying tuition.

Are the players not asking to be paid? That would be wages.

Kinda my idea. Instead of giving scholarships, cut a check to each student athlete for the cost of a full ride, plus an extra stipend. Make the athletes pay their own way and pay taxes on it. If they want extra $$, don’t pay for the tutors, buy a smaller meal plan, buy used books, etc.........Now they are “employees “ of the university and subject to the same regulations as other employees. See how they like that.
