cigarettes are bad for you so we'll place a high tax on them to discourage their purchase because we don't want you to smoke but we also need the revenue they generate so if you're gonna smoke you'd best buy them in Tennessee, or else.

That flawed logic is big here in GA as well. Those things are evil and addictive but since you're going to do it anyway, we'll tax you endlessly for using it. Doesn't this make government an accomplice to this? So can I sue Big Government when I sue Big Tobacco? After all Big Government is exploiting and profitting from this evil addiction.

the tobacco lawsuits settled a few years ago are a prime example of big government wanting the money and the issue. All of those billions of dollars, after various attorneys collected their monstrous fees, were allegedly to be used by the states to fund healthcare for children. I don't know about Georgia, but I do know that Tennessee used the settlements for anything but that.

If they would only be as concerned about illegal aliens entering our state as they are cigarette revenue leaving the state... :ermm:

kill two birds with one stone, when the illegal immigrants leave the state to buy cheap cigarettes, use that as a springboard for their deportation.

And watch all of that revenue dry up....once government gets comfortable with a tax rate or revenue generated and then it is lost, they will find a way to make up for it.
