'22 TN DT Walter Nolen (Ole Miss)

really triggering some people saying Nolan looked overrated.
I’m really surprised you can’t see how it’s grown into quite a bit more than just, “he looked overrated.”

There are some real homers on here that will defend him come hell or high water, but equally as foolish is the belief that this kid wouldn’t see the field for Maryville. I just think you’re being a little disingenuous to suggest that the idea that he looked a tad overrated isn’t clouded by the Maryville fandom of a couple posters, either, yourself included.

Them: “Nolen doesn’t play like the #1 player in the Country. He’s not even the best defensive player in the class.”

Also them: “How dare the staff let an instate player go elsewhere!”

Anything to twist their narrative. Pretty pathetic.
Both can be true. I’m not one saying he’s not the best. I don’t know that. He could be #1, he could be #5. I just know he’s got a lot of talent but not good conditioning

Ok it has been fun playing the heel Maryville homer for a while. I'm going back into VN hibernation. Everybody enjoy the season.

Hey, I can't blame you for being a homer. I remember the days when we could all confidently be homers for the Vols, and boy was that fun. Good luck to Maryville this season. Unlike rooting for the SEC, I do enjoy when east Tennessee schools show out in the State Championships.

I wonder if Nick Saban is going to withdraw his offer after he hears about the hard-hitting analysis of these mega high school football fans
People don’t seem to understand the difference between he’s not good and he’s out of shape.

He’s awesome! He dominated in camps. He’s recruited very highly and we 💯 want him.

BUT he’s out of shape and it’s affecting his performance dramatically in games

Nobody has denied that. He's the best player in the country who didn't go through summer workouts. He'll be in shape shortly, and no one will be talking about this anymore.

Uh, the guy I replied to seems to think “some people” think they’re better than evaluators than coaches and he’s not worth recruiting. I don’t believe anyone thinks that

All I know is that I would rather have Nolen play for us than against us...

At this point in our program, anticipating the long climb back to relevance, I would take Nolen just for (a) the perception that comes with landing a 5* recruit, and (b) to avoid the perception that comes with losing a local 5* recruit.

He's essentially a must get, even if he doesn't live up to all of the hype.

Nolen feels like Cade Mays all over again. Great player in the area that chooses to go elsewhere. Hope I'm wrong.

They tailored the playcalling for sure. Still, they had plenty of inside zone runs where Nolen was still a non-factor (and a couple where he made the play). And I don't know which player you saw blocking him, but the one I saw was not anywhere near the measurables you described. 6'-4"? I didn't see anyone out there as tall as Nolen except two of Powell's offensive Linemen. And after the first quarter, he wasn't double teamed other than standard combo blocking, which is what Maryville would do to any other DT not named "Walter Nolen".
Aiden Edwards OG 6'7" 265lbs
Carlos Yanez G,T. 6'4" 265

My "he wouldn't play" remark was somewhat tongue in cheek. Though there is precedent at Maryville for their best defensive player to quit the team due to not being able to pass the mandatory conditioning test. Granted, he wasn't a 5* recruit, so who knows what Quarles would've done if he had been.
You spent a good deal of time rationalizing and explaining it for it to have solely been clever hyperbole.

If Nolen had enrolled at Maryville, it would have been because Maryville went out of their way to make it happen. No way you spend that kind of time recruiting a kid as naturally talented as Nolen to come play for your school to then try and make some Remember The Titans level example out of him for not being in shape. Right or wrong, kids like him don’t have to be in shape to make an impact on Friday nights in East Tennessee high school football. And like I said before, Nolen’s presence is simply enough to make an impact. He plays DT, so he isn’t likely going to make a huge dent in the box score. Just the nature of that position. Take up space, make them run away from you, and tackle what’s in front of you. That’s what he is being asked to do. If he were an off the ball LB and had little to no direct impact, I’d be more concerned.

Walter Nolen probably has more scholarship offers than the entire Maryville football team, but he wouldn’t play there. Got it. Guess high school fans are the real talent evaluators and not college coaches.

I’ll agree with this 100%..Powell has more players with big time offers than Maryville same goes with Alcoa on a regular basis. Just goes to show you how important coaching can be. Powell has way more talent than Maryville but it’s not utilized.

But you would expect a dominant interior player to stop the interior runs, yes? He didn't (with the exception of a couple). Maryville ran inside zones in proportions that aren't that far off from their normal game plans.
and you would expect a fan to be excited they are getting the #1 recruit. Nolen will be fine
