When Hayden Wilhelm recently learned of his opportunity to be a preferred walk-on at Tennessee, he didn't have to spend much time thinking about what he wanted to do. He couldn't pass up the chance to play for the team he grew up liking.

..."The decision was an easy one," said Wilhelm, who was a three-year starter at Brentwood. "I grew up a Vol. My dad, aunt, grandfather and cousin (graduated from Tennessee), and my brother goes there." The 6-foot, 215-pound Wilhelm announced his decision by tweeting, "COMMITTED!! I’M HOME #VFL #GBO." He said he and the Vols' coaches had "been talking the whole spring" before finally offering him a preferred walk-on spot " a couple weeks ago." "I have lots of lower-division offers," he said. "But I’ve been holding out and waiting for this opportunity."

He said he has grown up attending games at Tennessee, and "running through the 'T' is a dream come true." In the end, he couldn't pass up the chance to play for the Vols. "I have gone to Tennessee games since I was 5...I remember like it was yesterday when I was in Neyland (Stadium) watching them play (Oklahoma), and the environment in Neyland that game was something I really dreamed of being part of. I’m very excited to get up there and to get to work with (defensive coordinator Tim) Banks and staff. ... I look forward to contributing to the Vols!"

...As a senior, Wilhelm recorded 83 tackles and three forced fumbles despite missing more than five games with an injury he suffered Oct. 2 during Brentwood's 37-0 loss to eventual Class 6A state champion Oakland High School of Murfreesboro, Tenn. He said he returned in the second round of the playoffs and was able to "contribute to our state runner-up playoff run." He was credited with six total tackles...in last year's Class 6A title game.

I’ve never seen so many supposedly Vol fan whiny babies. It’s just not becoming of a man, gentlemen, to cry all the time.

Glad to see the young man happy to WALK ON and try to get this program out of the ditch that it’s in.

A good builder uses every useful tool at his disposal, that’s what it seems like Heupel is doing.
