I have a little truth for you, and it's pure fact:
Derek Dooley
Louisiana Tech
2007 5-7 (4-4) t-4th
2008 8-5 (5-3) t-2nd (Independence Bowl - W)
2009 4-8 (3-5) t-5th
Tennessee
2010 6-7 (3-5) t-3rd(east) (Music City Bowl - L)
2011 5-7 (1-7) 6th(east)
2012 4-7 (0-7) 6th(east)*
*did not coach 12th game
Butch Jones
Central Michigan
2007 8-6 (6-1) 1st(west) (Motor City Bowl - L)
2008 8-5 (6-2) t-2nd(west) (Motor City Bowl - L)
2009 11-2 (8-0) 1st(west) (GMAC Bowl, did not coach)
Cincinnati
2010 4-8 (2-5) 7th
2011 10-3 (5-2) t-1st (Liberty Bowl - W)
2012 9-3 (5-2) t-1st (Belk Bowl, will not coach)
The simple fact of the matter is that in 6 years of coaching, Derek Dooley had only 1 winning season, while in the same time, Butch Jones only had 1 losing season. Additionally, Jones has done twice something that Dooley has never done, and that's finish a season ranked in the AP top 25 (25th in 2009 at CMU and 25th in 2011 at Cincy). These are schools that shouldn't be in the top 25. Ever.
Keep in mind, Jones did this with MAC and Big East schools, schools that by no means attract the caliber of players that UT does. When you give Jones the talent that UT does have the ability to pull, the sky is the limit. For the fans, no, this wasn't a home run. For the program, and I'm quite confident in saying this, it was a freaking Grand Slam. Jones builds a rapport with his players that is simply unmatched. There's no question that the man can coach a football team. I have every confidence in saying that he will be around UT for a long long time, and one day, we'll all be telling our grandkids about the legacy of Coach Jones.
