45-0 vs Austin Peay (This one hurts)

The Vols first team did pretty much everything it wanted to do on both offense and defense for a half on its way to an eventual 45-0 win against Austin Peay tonight. In a nearly flawless performance, the Vols had 30 first downs and zero penalties, and the offense scored touchdowns on its first 6 drives.

Quarterback Justin Worley played the entire first half, and Nathan Peterman played the second with the second team. Worley went 11-13 for 104 yards and 3 TDs, and Peterman went 4-8 for 28 yards. Rajion Neal led all rushers with 141 yards, and Marquez North led all receivers with 33 yards on 3 catches.

On defense, Byron Moore led the way with five tackles, and both Daniel Hood and Malik Foreman had interceptions.

UT - 55
Pacific - 7

No. 9 Tennessee barely got a workout against outmanned Pacific Saturday night, but the tuneup could prove very costly for the Volunteers.

Sophomore tailback Chuck Webb went down with a knee injury on Tennessee's second series and was later taken to a hospital. It hardly slowed the Volunteers down, though, as they rolled to a 55-7 victory after piling up a school record 31 points in the first quarter.

Webb scored Tennessee's first touchdown on an 8-yard run, but was injured after Tennessee regained the ball with an interception. He took a pitchout toward the left side, reversed his field and was hurt on an open-field tackle at the Pacific 19.

hird-string tailback Tavio Henson picked up the slack for Webb, rushing 14 times for 115 yards. Henson, in his first college game at tailback, scored on a 34-yard run to open the second quarter. Greg Burke added the first of two field goals -- a 31-yarder -- to make it 41-0 at the half.

Second-string tailback Tony Thompson picked up 83 yards on seven carries, all in the first half, and scored on runs of 9 and 52 yards. Freshmen Kenneth Campbell added a 1-yard TD run and Ronald Davis rounded out the scoring on a run of 8 yards.

The Volunteers rolled up 309 yards rushing and 136 passing despite quarterback Andy Kelly leaving the game after the first quarter. Kelly hit 5 of 7 passes for 130 yards, including a 43-yard scoring pass to Anthony Morgan.

The Volunteers held Pacific to 68 yards passing and made three interceptions.

Colorado St - 14

The opening game of the ‘89 season was more of a nail biter than expected, but UT found a way to win.

Reggie Cobb gained 98 yards on 16 carries while big Greg Amsler gained 59 yards on 11 attempts, with each scoring TDs. UT rushed for 232 yards and held the ball for 20 minutes in the second half.

Shon Walker led UT with 12 tackles and Tracy Hayworth had a TFL and a sack as UT held the Rams to 82 yards on the day.

UT - 42
Montana- 16

“After kickoff was delayed for an hour and a half for lightning, Tennessee lost yards on its first drive as Caleb McSurdy sacked Tyler Bray for a loss of 10 yards on third down. Montana's Peter Nguyen fumbled the subsequent punt, and Bray connected with Da’ Rick Rogers on a flea-flicker on the next play to put the Vols up 7-0 with 12:47 to go in the first quarter.

On the third-and-7 at the Vols 19 on the following drive, Bray hit Justin Hunter around midfield, and Hunter outran defenders the rest of the way for the 81-yard touchdown play.

Bray finished 17-of-24 with 293 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The touchdown pass to Hunter marked his seventh consecutive game with two or more TDs, tying a record set by Peyton Manning during his senior season in 1997.”

“Hunter grabbed six receptions for 146 yards, and Rogers had 100 yards on five catches to become the Volunteers' first pair to each have more than 100 yards receiving in a single game since 2007.”

Elder Son&Heir and I were at that game.

If memory serves, this game was interrupted by a downpour that would have impressed Noah. They actually cleared the stands for a while. The upside was the impromptu "wet t-shirt" contest on the concourse behind the student section in the East Stands.

Not that I was looking ... but Elder Son&Heir seemed most impressed!

UT - 42
Wyoming - 17

For 52½ of the 60 minutes, Wyoming went nose-to-nose with Tennessee (No. 2 ESPN/USA Today, No. 2 AP) and played the Vols to a standoff.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, those other 7½ minutes were devastating.

The defending champion Volunteers scored four touchdowns during that stretch in the second quarter, and it was enough for a 42-17 victory.

"The second quarter seemed to last two and a half hours," Cowboys coach Dana Dimel said. "That was a long quarter."

Jamal Lewis returned from the knee injury that ended his '98 season to score three touchdowns and gain 159 yards in 25 carries.

Tee Martin threw touchdown passes of 55 and 16 yards to Cedrick Wilson, and linebacker Eric Westmoreland scored with a fumble recovery.

The Volunteers began defense of their national title with a big day by the defense, which had a school-record 13 sacks, four turnovers and one touchdown.

Louisville - 11

Carl Pickens caught a 75-yard touchdown pass and scored on a 67-yard punt return as 11th-ranked Tennessee ended Louisville’s eight-game winning streak with a 28-11.

Freshmen Aaron Hayden and James Stewart added touchdown runs for the Volunteers before a record Cardinal Stadium crowd of 40,457.

Tennessee (1-0) dominated the game despite five turnovers. The defending Southeastern Conference champions gained nearly twice as many yards as Louisville, 421-211.

Louisville (1-1) pulled to 21-11 early in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Brohm to Randy Wyatt and a two-point conversion run by Brohm. But Tennessee clinched the victory with 10:49 left when Pickens fielded a punt on his 33, put a move on the Cardinals’ Terrance Roscoe and raced down the right sideline for a TD.

Tennessee’s Andy Kelly completed 10 of 20 passes for 150 yards with two interceptions. Pickens, who led the SEC in receiving last year, had four receptions for 98 yards.

Dale Carter was the first string punt returner, but was injured. Tennessee was loaded. Pickens was a great player.

New Mexico - 21

The one-game suspension of 10 Tennessee players Saturday night for improper distribution of tickets seemed totally out of proportion to the nature of the violation, according to Johnny Majors, the Volunteers' coach.

Despite losing the services of the 10 players Saturday, including the superb place-kicker, Carlos Reveiz, Tennessee scored a 35-21 triumph over New Mexico in Knoxville. Keith Davis, the Tennessee tailback, scored two touchdowns on runs of 46 and 14 yards.

''It was a travesty of justice considering the crime,'' Majors said. ''It was just not realistic. It was sort of like sending a guy to prison for a year for going 65 miles an hour in a 55-mile zone.

''I'm not saying what they did was right because it wasn't. But under these rules a player may not be able to give a pass to his fiancee or girlfriend while another player who is married can give a ticket to his wife. And when there are sellouts a kid can't even buy a ticket for a girlfriend.''

UCLA- 20

The final big play of the game belonged to Peyton Manning, and his 53-yard touchdown pass to Joey Kent with 6:30 left gave the No. 2 Volunteers a 35-20 victory over UCLA on Saturday night at Knoxville, Tenn.

Manning, who threw for two TDs and ran for two more, fought off a relentless pass rush and finished off the Bruins with a play fake that new coach Bob Toledo won’t soon forget. Manning was 16 of 28 for 288 yards.

With the Vols clinging to a 28-20 lead after Cade McNown’s 88-yard touchdown pass to Danny Farmer with 9:41 left in the game, Manning finally hooked up with Kent, his favorite receiver.

A Neyland Stadium record crowd of 106,297 was looking for a game of big plays from the Vols, but the Bruins produced a few of their own.

UCLA, in its first game for Toledo after 20 years under Terry Donahue, stayed close with two long scores.
