I apologize if this was discussed in another thread, but I was wondering how large the crowd was for the opener today.

Thanks!

around 2,800. Record crowd for opener.

I'm glad it was a record, but 2,800 seems really tiny to me. I didn't see any crowd shots, but when they said it was a healthy attendance I expected 10-15,000....

maybe that's my ignorance... What sort of crowds do the bigger college baseball teams get?

2800 is pretty strong for a Feb. season opener against Northern IL. Outside of Miss. St. and maybe LSU, I don't think any teams get close to 10,000-15,000.

Lindsey Nelson only holds 3,712 people. 75% capacity for opening day is great for a team that is picked to finish dead last in the SEC.

Thats fair enough, I thought that College Baseball would be really really popular because Baseball is so popular in the US. Obviously not. Any reason for this?

I don't know why this is the case though, I really enjoyed today's game. Even though I couldn't tune in till the 8th inning because of technical difficulties.

I am going to do my best to keep up with the Vols Baseball team, as hard as it will be for me. :good!:

I can't describe to any of you how much I have become proud to be a fan. Yes I am more of a Packers fan overall, but I feel more a part of the Vols unlike any of my other teams. Maybe it's because of this website, maybe because there are multiple teams so you can follow them all year round, I don't know. Whatever it is though, It's solidified me as a VOL FOR LIFE!

College baseball isn't that popular overall. I believe it is because baseball is different than any other sport. Where college football and basketball are a feeder system to the pros, baseball has a miner league system that feeds itself. The best high school baseball players go pro straight out of high school.
However for baseball purists, the college game is the best example of playing the game the right way.

Basically like the above poster said.

Baseball has a great system for how they run their league (One many people feel other sports should adopt). Basically, if you're good enough to go pro out of high school, go. If you go to college to play you have to stay at least three years, then you can come up. Either way is fine, and lots play sooner by going to college because they can't compete in the minors yet. The minors is made up of struggling major league talent, young talent, old talent, injured talent, and any other kind of talent with a small problem in the majors. College is much easier because everyone is the same age at the least.

It also isn't pumped 24/7 by ESPN like football is. If college baseball had a tenth of the coverage football and basketball has, it'd be a lot more popular. There are some good players and teams out there, but the typical sports fan/ESPN watcher doesn't know who they are since they get all their news from ESPN.

I thought the crowd was very good. The porch was full, there was even people sitting the bleachers along the third base line. My wife pointed out that it was probable better than any we had for the whole year last year. I just hope the fans stick with this team all year.

Thanks for the explanation guys. I always thought that college produced most MLB talent.

Do any percentage of college baseball players make the major league?

included in the crowd today were football players AJ Johnson, Curt Maggitt, and Marlin Lane. I got a picture with them and my son, but Maggitt had just left to watch film. Cool guys and they were nice to my son. Said they loved baseball too!

That's really cool! Sounds like it was all happening down at the ball park last night!

Are you going for tonights games?

I've never been to a UT baseball game but am thinking about going today. Can tickets be purchased at a box office or do they have to be bought online? And what about parking; is it similar to football games?

Plenty of walk up tickets available. The GA seats at UT are better than anywhere else in the SEC. In fact, some of GA bleacher seats down right field line are the best views in the house.

Parking is FAAAAAR easier than football. Even though many parking lots are gone through construction, you can park at the garage at Andy Hold Administration building and walk the 2 blocks to stadium quite easily. That lot was being used for Monster Truck event last night but was free until the game began.

Thanks man! Too bad I'm still relatively new to Knoxville and don't really know anyone here. Does VN have a meetup group? It needs one!

Good idea! It would be the biggest pain in the anus to attended for me though. Maybe the meeting point should be London...
