Anybody have any earthly idea what is going on with Helton's health? This sounds scary.

Rockies' Helton placed on 15-day DL

Denver -- The Colorado Rockies placed first baseman Todd Helton on the 15-day disabled list with a stomach problem that has left him hospitalized for the past two days. Helton was admitted to the hospital Friday after experiencing severe cramps.

On Saturday, Rockies manager Clint Hurdle would not comment on Helton's condition or even reveal a diagnosis. It was first thought Helton had picked up a bug that has been going through the Colorado clubhouse, but now it sounds more ominous.

"With respect to himself or his family, we're not going to say anything other than the fact it is his best interest to put him on the DL and let the doctors acquire all the information they need to acquire," Hurdle said.

The Rockies train in Arizona. You can pick up some pretty bizarre ailments in the desert. Hopefully, it's nothing of any signifigance.

Based on their reluctance to talk to the media, the need for extensive tests, and the severity of the cramps, I would guess the doctors believe he has something serious like Crohn's disease or colorectal cancer.

It could be anything though, there are 46 conditions which have symptoms of cramps:

That's exactly what I thought when I read the report. The fact that they DL'd him so fast for something as vague as stomach pain made me think the worst. Hope it's not serious.

He would be to young for cancer. However, sever abdominal cramps along with bleeding would also be related to Ulcerative colitis which is the inflammation of the large intestine.
Chrones disease affects the small intestine.
I suffer from Ulcerative Colitis which can be maintained by anti-inflamitory medicine. I had the same symptoms as Helton and it took a month before docotrs diagnosed it correctly through an exam. I just hope it is not the case for helton but he can still lead a normal life regardless.

If that is the case, I don't understnad why they would be reluctant to discuss it with the media, its a treatable disease. And why it would be necessary to put him immediately on a 15 day dl. Unless this is more serious disease then I have thought.

He's 32, its young, but not to young for cancer I believe.

I agree with you though, it is very consistent with his symptom, severe stomach cramps. Your probably right.

I think the reason they are hush hush right now there is no exact diagnosis and it is not a pleasant experience to deal with since they need the right meds to treat exactly what it is. If they dont know what it is he is alot of discomfort.
This illness just started. A colonoscpy and biospy will give a fast result as to what it is. Also, he needs to cope with this mentally. If he has a IBD (intestinal bowel disease) he will need to learn to adjust his lifestyle accordingly. It is something that you dont want to talk about to the general public right away. It is not the end of his career.

Good grief. This thread has been my definition of "speculation." I certainly hope it's not serious too though.

Why slam this thread by saying that? Is there something wrong with speculating how serious someone's health condition is?

This is again one of those threads that I wish Kiddedoc would speak to, Id think his opinion would be intresting. However Im sure he doesnt out of professionalism in that he cant speak to a health condition he has'nt personally examined.

I'm not trying to diagnose the problem or speculate. I just saw this and was concerned by the circumstances.

I played against Todd when I was a senior and he was a freshman. He was a tremendous player at that age. Also, he carried himself very well. He was a star, but didn't act like one.

DENVER -- Todd Helton's teammates and fans had reason to feel better about the news coming out of the Rockies clubhouse throughout the day Sunday. Manager Clint Hurdle expressed a sense of guarded optimism as he limited his words before the game, relaying the latest medical information from head trainer Keith Dugger and internal medical specialist Dr. Allen Schreiber about Helton, who has been hospitalized since Friday with severe stomach discomfort.
"Keith got a call from Dr. Schreiber this morning," Hurdle said. "They had a conversation about 9:30, and I think there's improvement. That's about all we're going to say, just because we want to be sure we don't pass on information that isn't proper. This is a medical matter. It's a private matter, although Todd's a public figure. There's improvement. More optimism today maybe than there was yesterday."

Helton was placed on the disabled list Saturday and is likely to remain at Rose Medical Center for continuing diagnosis and treatment throughout the weekend, with a Monday release possible, pending a morning evaluation. Little information has been made public about the nature of his illness, and doctors do not appear to have made a definitive diagnosis yet.

Dugger added more details after the game, noting that the reason for optimism was primarily from Helton's own assessment of the way he feels, rather than from specific results from any of the tests run on him.

"Today he's feeling better," Dugger said. "He turned the corner a little bit. There's not as much pain. They're still running more tests on him, and he's probably in the hospital an additional day."

A comprehensive diagnosis could be made by Monday or Tuesday, according to Dugger, who previously indicated that the doctors were "waiting for more tests to confirm their thoughts.

"At this time, they haven't officially eliminated anything," said Dugger. "They're going to run more tests. I'm not even quite sure what these tests are yet. If those tests come back, they'll let him at least go home and rest."
