What does this mean?

"DeAngelo Williams had practiced and I expected him to play. He felt like he would be better coming off the bench. I knew we had to play like men today and, with him playing or not, we're going to play. He had a problem going to his right. We knew he wasn't going to play before we came out for the game."

I think it means that they knew he was not going to play all week and did not want that news to be out there. Talked to a Memphis person whose theory was that a decision was made related to the "long term" for him, not just for this game.

The first line says West expected him to play.

I think Williams didn't want to play through a little injury and asked to come off the bench. This really made West mad and he never put him in the game. Williams didn't want to hurt his yards per game averages.

That's what I was thinking, he didn't want his stats to go down against our defense. :biggrin2:

Cutcliffe and his guy talked about William's injury last Tuesday. They seemed to think the injury was worse than what was being discussed during the week. Maybe I misunderstood that discussion...

As I've stated before coach West is an old school tough as nails rooster, from my expierience. He believes in things like showing up everytime your expected to, irregardless of pain, inconvienience, etc. It sounds like he's saying Deangelo (in his opinion) is being a pussy about his work ethic and he let down his teamates, although in parts of his statement he made attempts to sound like he believed(politically correctly) he was injured and would'nt play and that was ok with him, when in reality, it wasn't ok with him.

This guy was a meatball from back in his days at Clemson. They had some touchy-feely article on him in the Columbia paper about how he had turned it all around from his days of running around on his wife and not being a good father, blah-blah-blah. He was good at impersonating Danny Ford as far as yuckin' it up and being a good ole country boy, but as far as a coach, he's just a big goof.

Not trying to be a flamer but where does this animosity toward coach West come from? I played for him and he's a good guy from what I saw. I've personally never heard about his personal life problems but we're all human, those in the public eye have their personal lives get placed under a microscope sensationalizing what everyday folks keep private. He is an old school coach in modern day political correct values, that sometimes cause him to look out of control. His teams from the Clemson days (that in your words caused him to look like a meatball)and Memphis for that matter have 1 common denominator with the Vols...players who don't execute and have attitude problems :twocents:

If he's that old school, maybe it's time for him to buy a piece of farm land next to Coach Ford and take his "aw-shucks" personality out to pasture. Part of being a head coach in today's game is being able to speak in complete sentences and get an intelligent point across. This has never been Tommy Boy's strong suit. I agree with you on your point about being under a microscope, but that's part of life in the public eye. I admire you for standing up for your old coach, but believe me, there are many more Clem Tech fans that have issues with West than I do. That's my 2 cents.

I know this guy . . . well. And had the "pleasure" of sitting right next to him for the SC game.

from GoVols:
"I wasn't messing with you all," he said. "I really expected him to play."

Expectations or not, once Williams said he didn't feel good enough to start, that was enough for West.

No discussion.

Williams didn't approach his coach.

"I never said anything to him after that," West said. "If he ain't well enough to start, he ain't well enough to come off the bench. We're either playing or we're not. Nobody knows him better than he does. He knows if he can go or not."

I heard the interview and it was really strange sounding. There had to be something else to this.
