I know this was in the Cards thread. But I thought it deserved a thread by itself.

One of the all time greatest. Thank you for your service Tony. You will be missed.

I always liked LaRussa. He didn't put up with much trash and if you didn't do things his way then you were gone. Rasmus is a good example of that. He had a hands-on style during the games that isn't very common any more. That gave him about as much influence as a baseball manager can have over the outcome of games. He has managed longer than I've been alive, so it will be odd that he is missing.

3rd most wins of all time. Great decision to retire now, on top. He'll be in Cooperstown.

Now the question is who will the Cardinals go after. Obviously with it's history and talent on the roster now, STL should be able to attract some big names. I hope they reach out to Francona.

I hope its Bobby Valentine. I might like the Cards better if that were to happen

I do not know that there has been another manager over the past twenty years who has understood baseball strategy and tactics like LaRussa.

1. St. Louis is a great baseball town.
2. The pay is good.
3. The ownership will insure that the manager has enough talent to compete and win.
4. St. Louis is a great baseball town.

I hate the state of Missouri; I hate St. Louis; however, I have to hand it to Cardinals fans. They certainly know baseball and know how to support their team.

I'd add to your list:
5. Realistic expectations from the fans and ownership.
6. A solid roster returning.
7. Very good farm system.
