Now the legendary quarterback, who played in the NFL for the Washington Redskins, plans to be at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday to see his alma mater take on Virginia Tech in the Pilot/Flying J Battle at Bristol. He recently visited the massive stadium and thought about what it will be like for the current group of players to take part in one Tennessee tradition.

“There is nothing like running through the T at UT, but playing here would be hard to explain,” he said. “I think I would throughly enjoy it.”

Many throughly enjoyed watching Robinson play and his style as a dual-threat quarterback has drawn comparisons with current Vols signal caller Josh Dobbs. Robinson sees it himself. “He reminds me of myself a little bit,” Robinson said. “He is a little bit better than I was. I think he’s going to come along and turn out to be a brute force.”

Excellent read on Robinson from early June, don't think I've seen it posted here:

Robinson says he returned to Knoxville to get his degree from Tennessee. He needs 12 hours to graduate. He took spring and summer semesters off, but returns the classroom in the fall. In the meantime, Robinson umpires youth baseball games and works other jobs.

Getting his sociology degree is priority No. 1.

“It’s huge,” Robinson said. “That’s what I came to school for, to get my degree. I told my mom I’d get my degree, and that’s what I’m here to do, get my degree. I told my mom and dad that a long time ago. I want to get that degree and just move on.”

good for him, i know he had his fair share of troubles in his life, but as for who's better? TR was the man. had he not gotten injured and had all the drug issues, he was destined to be one of the greats.

False modesty on Tony's part IMO. With all due respect to Joshua, it's not really close. TRob is the most talented QB I've ever seen at Tennessee. Not the most accomplished, the most talented.

Hope to see a similar cover after the Sept 24 game...

I like that SI cover. :)

One of my favorites, so fun to watch. Tennessee 38 #1 Auburn 20, and it was not as close as the score would indicate. That was a total beat-down.

That's a nice gesture by Tony. All respect to Dobbs, but that simply isn't true. Tony Robinson was the best QB ever at UT. Career cut short though for various reasons. For both self-inflicted reasons and non self-inflicted reasons..........

The 4th quarter of this game is my all time favorite. My best friend from my youth was a big Alabama fan and he came up from Montgomery, where he was living at the time, with a couple friends to go to the game with me. I figured we had lost the game going into the 4th quarter and it would take a miracle to win that one - actually, two miracles. There's no way I could expect that. Needless to say, over 3 decades later and I know miracles can happen. (The good part starts at the 55 min mark in this video).

Second best IMO. Most talented, but second best QB. Pretty sure we know who's #1.

TRob could throw it 50 yards "on a rope" while falling backwards. Not so much with J Dobbs (unfortunately).

However, lets also not forget that he had Tim McGee (NFL All-Pro) as a WR.

T-Rob was not a dual threat QB. He stood in the pocket and threw the bomb.

You are right. Just because he could scramble and run does not make him a dual threat. He was a drop back pocket passer that was athletic, one of the best.

Enjoyed that! Good memories, though '84 was a very ho hum season. Nice being reminded of the north end being open. TR had such nice touch on the ball.

It's not close. Tony was the most gifted QB I've seen here. He had it all...except good fortune.

Peyton is the most accomplished and had a better career, of course. Tony Robinson had a better arm in my opinion.

Oh yes, he did, little doubt about that IMO, we agree. I just give the nod to Peyton because of the full body of work over a much longer time/total of games. But in terms of pure talent, arm and otherwise? It was TRob.

I was there and enjoyed every minute, Bo Jackson didn't play the 2nd half due to thigh bruise
