I know this is random, but I realized that the 'national championship era' (starting with 1936 when the AP poll began naming champions every season) has covered 75 seasons now. I was just curious to see how people would rank the teams over that time frame.

Of course, there's a lot of room for debate, and I may have forgotten someone, but here some of the first teams that spring to mind.

1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. Notre Dame
4. Ohio State
5. USC

Tennessee is definitely top 10 over the last 75 years, but I definitely don't see how you can rank them over Oklahoma or Ohio State.

Being a Vol fan, I'm biased. They are in my top 5.

LG, I'll handle my own posts. Thanks so much.

They were left off of my list because i wouldn't take them over any of the 5 schools I listed. Not trying to be a smarta**, that's just how I see it.

It's fine if you think that, I just can't put Tennessee over them because they both have more national titles and a higher winning percentage.

I don't look at facts, haha. But seriously, an argument can be made for about 10 schools. I don't have all of the numbers in front of me but we know about Alabama's 28 NCs, ND's history, and Michigan's all-time win total. I honestly don't know where the Vols rank in win totals and win %. I took everything into consideration when making my top 5 (that I could think of off the top of my head), including players put in the pros. They (UT) won't be in many people's top 5...it was just my opinion.

During that era, we're 5th in wins so it's not deranged. With that said, I'm not sure if I'd put us top 5. We're in the top 8 or so undoubtedly.
I'd probably agree with that. I'd say it depends on how you count the national titles to determine our specific ranking.

based on wins......

the top 5 since 1936 are

1. oklahoma
2. texas
3. ohio state
4. penn state
5. tennessee

notre dame would be 10th.

based on winning percentage....

1. oklahoma
2. ohio state
3. penn state
4. michigan
5. texas

(techinically, boise state is #1 but i did not count them)

don't know if you choose only to rank based on wins and winning percentage alone.
