Excited to see this broken down tonight on ESPN. I wonder how valid the stat is. Peyton Manning probably had the hardest job of any "elite" QB last season with all the injuries. He fared much better in the Total QB rankings than he did with passer rating:

1. Tom Brady
2. Peyton Manning
3. Matt Ryan
4. Aaron Rodgers
5. Michael Vick
6. Drew Brees
7. Eli Manning
8. Josh Freeman
9. Philip Rivers
10. Ben Roethlisberger

7. Joe Flacco
8. Matt Cassel
9. Matt Schaub
10. Peyton Manning

Total QB Rating is supposed to discount TD's and yards thrown when a game's already decided and rewards completions in the redzone during last 2 minutes of a close game.

the way they expained the total qb rating it seems like it's better the passer rating, but inevitably there will be flaws that are brought up. they made a good case on that program last evening.

it was annoying though how dilfer practically said it will solve all the federal financial issues.

One flaw is that I'm pretty sure it does nothing to account for the difference between the Texans' historically bad pass defense and the Chargers' NFL-leading one.

I don't get that. You would think they could have done something with that.

I prefer "wins" and "losses" and how a quarterback does in the final minutes for my quarterback rating.

Obviously the main flaw is that it doesn't control for quality of teammates, scheme, and opponents. It's an arbitrary formula. It isn't based on a mathematical relationship between variables (winning = xTD's + xYards -xINT's + ....). But it's a lot better than passer rating, IMO.

Some interesting stats:

Brady had the #1 TQB Rating last year, Manning #2.

Manning has the #1 rating over the last 3 years, Brady #2 (they even included Brady's record-setting 2007 season since he was injured in 2008).

Brady's success rate on 3rd and 8+ is 29.7%. Manning's is 37.7%!!!

Manning = 6.0 "air" yds/comp, 2.2 sack%, 6 fumbles
Brady = 5.8 "air" yds/comp, 3.6%, 13 fumbles

TQBR puts weight on these kinds of stats, unlike passer rating.

Brady's oline actually gave him time to throw the ball last year. Manning had about 0.5 seconds to get rid of it. Also last year the Colts had the worse starting field position of any team in the NFL. Coupled with all the injuries and no running game it is amazing that they got to the playoffs. Without Manning that team would be one of the worse in the NFL.
