They hustle their butts off just like previous years. Their attention is better. When he is gone and also post the pittsburg win we played lazy for half a game.

They are playing a really good team, with one of the best coaches in the world in Jim Calhoun. Hopson and Field's turnovers have been really bad, but Goins, Bones, Pearl and Williams are working their butts off. Tatum should benched.

The game plan was to stop Walker, and they did a pretty good job with that. Unfortunately their other wings were hitting shots all day.

UCONN has looked pretty beatable today.

The failure today is Hopson. The system's designed to make him the go-to guy and he's not able. Indications that he's not a competitor suited to this level have been there all along. He's soft and slow. Gotta develop someone else.

Even with most of the team giving it everything they've got, you're just not going to beat a top-10 team when Hopson (all-around) and Tatum/Harris (offensively) don't show up.

so far as playing a very good team is concerned, they've beaten very good teams already this year. Today they fumbled away ... look at that: Hopson fumbles another one ... their opportunities. AND, our go-to guy is just plain NOT ABLE.

Good call, their wings and not ours stepped up and hit shots. Hopson and Tatum were beat by two frosh, Lamb and Roscoe Smith. I hope our coaches are in their ear about that for the rest of the season. I like Tatum when he plays hard, but he needs to bench because his effort on the road is pathetic and something needs to change.

On the positive side, Goins was obviously super offensively and Williams was excellent until hamstrung by 3 ticky-tack fouls. Fields is no substitute for Williams. Agree that Harris was off but, hey, he's still a freshman. Wonder why, down the stretch, the offensive scheme appeared to look to Goins rather than getting it inside to Harris. Couldn't Fields occupy some real estate inside and screen Harris from the UConn bigs?

I don't think much of Scotty Hopson as a basketball player (seems he's a great kid, tho') but he WAS a difference maker in beating Villanova - very confident in hitting key shots - and 3s - when it mattered. Trouble has been and continues to be that he can't muster the same moxy day-in and day-out.

I'm with atxVol in liking Tatum because, generally, he hustles. But today he was half speed most of the time, didn't get to the spots on the floor where he needed to be to make plays, and then missed at least one easy shot. Mental intensity wasn't there.
With a consistent effort today, the Vols would have been there at the end. In fact, had we pressured Lamb and Smith, more than one of those 3s don't go down and we're there anyway. UT has the raw ability to beat UConn in the tournament. But can they get past these "softness" problems?

This team has problems:
1) Consistant effective defence
2) Poor passing choices
3) Inconsistent ball handling, dribble drives
4) Bad hands catching open passes
5) Consistent intensity

That's enough to see where we are now.

Agree. Seems to me fixing these things requires team confidence in a go-to player which, as has been said in other threads today, we don't have, or a chemistry that exudes confidence enough for everyone. Pearl's system of playing 10 and 11 players works against this because a single unit never congeals completely.

I completely agree! To bad Pearl wasn't there for Oakland, Charlotte, USC, and CofC.

oh wait... thread has no point at all.

I agree with you that Tatum should be benched as he has become an offensive liability worse than Steven. I wonder if more players than McRae are on the wacky
weed.

First I've heard of a drug issue. Given history, this should be an alarm. Someone once told me that if you wanted to get to the root cause of virtually any issue with Vols men's basketball, just to watch the social environment of the Rocky Top summer league, inside and outside the gyms; that it all starts there. This observation seemingly proved true in the guns and marijuana incident last season.
If a known observable of trouble continues to recur, adults in the UT athletic community are being ineffective overseers, perhaps through lackadaisicalness or incompetence.
