Traffic fatalities fall to lowest level since 1949 - CNN.com

Why?

[ ] Too many cars on the road, no one can get up to speed.
[ ] Better consciousness of alcohol.
[ ]Turns out that texting while driving makes you more careful.
[ ] Cars are built better.
[ ] Magic.
Definitely #2 and probably #4 more than anything. I think better roads have something to do with it as well.

I think people also become more focused when listening to conservative talk radio.

I'd guess #4 with an increase in seat belt use.

This should have been an option.

It's undeniable. Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh save lives.

Listening to conservative radio makes people safer because they realize that, if they are in an accident, then the conservatives in government will advocate that they not get health care and just die.

So you're saying no health care leads to less deaths?

I thought listening to conservative radio made you laugh so hard you pulled off the road, therefore removing your driving from the eqution.

You have the accident/death ratio? Meaning are we having fewer deaths per accident or have accident totals themselves come way down.

I've got an option. Accidents are increasingly costly. People respond to incentives.

Safer cars, They all have that damn bell that goes off if you don't wear your seat belt.

Vehicle mortality rates spiked when seat belt laws were implemented.

Economic explanation: the cost of getting in an accident decreased, therefore drivers subconsciously drove more wreckless. Kind of like how you drive a Metro and how you drive a Tahoe.

I would like to see this data plotted against number or speeding tickets handed out. My bet is speeding tickets haven't done anything to curtail fatalities since they have nothing to do with safety anyway.

33 thousand traffic fatalities last year.

That's more than:

guns (including gang violence)
nuclear accidents
HIV and AIDS

and yet, the above 3 are constantly crowed about in the media, particularly the MSNBC and NPR crowds
