So anyway, I am posting this not because of the proposed change to the portal but because of the numbers involved.

NCAA Council recommends shortened transfer portal windows, amendments to gambling punishments

Anyway, in another article there were around 3600 division 1 football players entering the transfer portal in fall 22-spring 23. 2300+ in fall and 1200+ in spring via ESPN.

There are only 130 D1 teams.

Did each team really average 25+ players entering the portal in a year? Holy smokes. Adding in graduation/end of eligibility and that's about 40 percent of your roster in upheaval.

As far as the gambling thing, How can you legislate that anyone in a State can gamble EXCEPT Football/Basketball players? I get the "Gambling on your own games/sport) thing, but to totally ban athletes would raise serious Constitutional issues; IMO. That said, who among us doesn't know how to be creative? Evidently 25 Iowa & Iowa St players.

They should have shut the portal down the very second Billy indicated he had interest in Mertz/miller and stopped that acquisition in its tracks

It would seem to me that not allowing a student of legal age to gamble is a violation of one of the Constitution's tenents or amendments.Betting on your own games could be prohibited, but betting on others(ala parley sheet)would be legal.Seems as if the old farts just want to keep their control over something.

Gambling isn't a right.

If you just scroll through the portal, we even have several guys in there that none of us have ever heard of. When you factor in walk ons, CFB rosters really are huge.

LouderVol,I realize that gambling is not a right, but,if you allow some people to do something, but disallow others, isn't that discrimanitory(spelling) to the athletes?Always questions that only lawyers and politicians could answer.Ther is the main problem.

The NFL doesn’t allow football players to bet on football games. It’s completely within their right to make that rule.

They (NCAA) are a voluntary association that agrees to operate under the same set of rules, unless you are Bama. They are free to leave and gamble all they want. If they want to participate in the completely voluntary athletic program ran by the NCAA they have to follow the NCAA's rules. No gambling makes sense so you dont have people throwing games.

Let them figure out the grass isn’t always greener. A lot of these guys will have to settle for playing at some place like New Mexico St. before they get the message that maybe transferring wasn’t the best idea. It will also deter hangers-on from whispering in their ears looking to cash in on NIL money.

More and more the NCAA is becoming a paper kitten.

I know that you know the difference, but to clear things up for the uninitiated, parley is a conference to cease hostilities between two opposing parties, whereas parlay is leveraging a wager concerning the outcome of two or more events in order to increase the prospective payout.

I think they are talking all of division 1 (both FBS and FCS). That would be 261 schools, about 14 per school which would be more believable. Its also possible that walk on are part of that number too.
Deion got rid of dang near all 85 and then some, so that skews the numbers a bit too.
