ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- Travis Henry is through playing for the Buffalo Bills, intent to sit out as long as it takes the team to trade him.

"I'm definitely not going back to Buffalo if that's what you want to hear," the running back told The Associated Press on Monday from his home in Orlando, Fla. "No minicamps. No training camp. No nothing. ... I packed my stuff and left. As soon as the season was over, I was out of there and I didn't have any plans of coming back."

Henry, who started during his first three seasons in Buffalo, has one year left on his contract and is unwilling to spend another year as Willis McGahee's backup.

The Bills granted Henry permission in January to speak to other teams about a potential trade. Of the teams that expressed interest, Henry said the Arizona Cardinals have offered to trade starting left tackle L.J. Shelton in a player-for-player deal.

Henry doesn't understand why the Bills -- in need of offensive line help -- haven't accepted the offer. Henry added he's willing to play for Arizona, a team in need of a starting running back since Emmitt Smith's retirement last month.

"The whole situation, it's really frustrating," Henry said. "I just want to move on with my life and my career."

Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold declined comment.

Cardinals officials were at the NFL owners meetings in Hawaii, and unavailable for comment.

Bills president Tom Donahoe addressed the Henry trade issue in a question and answer session on the team's Web site last week, writing that he's seeking fair value in return for Henry.

"At the present time, there is not enough interest to make a trade," Donahoe wrote. "And if things continue in that vein, we would expect to have Travis back again next year."

Henry believes the Shelton trade would help both teams, considering the Bills lost three offensive linemen to free agency earlier this month, including starting left tackle Jonas Jennings, who has since signed with San Francisco.

"They said they weren't just going to let me go. I understand that," Henry said. "But here's a win-win situation. ... Arizona has shown interest. They've shown they're ready to pull the trigger. And Donahoe is taking his poor little precious time for some reason."

Henry had been the Bills starter since the team selected him in the second round of the 2001 draft out of Tennessee. He put together consecutive 1,300-yard seasons before losing the job to McGahee last October.

Henry finished with 326 yards rushing last year and missed the final five games with torn ligaments in his right ankle.

Shelton, a first-round pick in 1999, has started 77 games. Falling out of favor with Cardinals' first-year coach Dennis Green last season, Shelton had only nine starts and missed the final three games with a left knee injury.

Shelton, who has the Cardinals permission to seek a trade, visited the Bills last month.

He has four more years left on his contract that will pay him $3 million a season -- very affordable for a Bills team that has little room left under the salary cap.

What frustrates Henry is that the Bills knew this running back dispute could arise when they drafted McGahee. And Henry thought he was being a team player when he didn't reveal his frustrations after he was demoted last season.

"It was tough for me being in the locker room last year," Henry said. "I didn't make a big deal out of everything that was happening. I didn't understand it, but I dealt with it."

What bothers Henry even more is how the Bills granted Drew Bledsoe's request to be released last month after the starting quarterback was unwilling to accept a secondary role behind J.P. Losman. Bledsoe has since signed with Dallas.

"He wasn't going to be a backup and I ain't going to be no backup," Henry said. "They shipped Drew out of there. I want to be shipped out of there, point blank."

Also on Monday, the Bills re-signed backup running back Joe Burns. Mostly used on special teams, Burns had 20 carries for 73 yards last season.

Indy or Atlanta.......Wouldn't mind seeing him there...Or even though the Titans have Chris Brown....I wouldn't mind seeing him go there

Wouldn't it be strange to see Peyton handing off to Henry wearing blue-and-white???

What abour Miami. They need a running back.

They're projected in the draft to take Ronnie Brown or Cadillac Williams......Which, IMO, wouldn't be a bad idea....Both are very strong and fast NFL type backs

Seriously, Cheese has every right to be ticked. When he was drafted he put up big numbers for a rookie, especially since he was pretty much unheralded when he arrived in Buffalo and earned the starting spot. So what do the Bills do the very next draft? Use their first round pick on McGahee, when Travis had given them no reason to doubt him or his performance. I hope he gets outta there, I wish he would have gotten out of there last year. There won't be much demand for him. Not that he's not good (he is), but the market is flooded with free agent RBs, and so is the upcoming draft. He's right about the Arizona trade, it helps both teams, but the Bills are being greedy. Like I said the market is flooded, so they won't get an offer for what he's actually worth.

I'd love it if a deal was worked out to send Edge to Miami, Miami sends a couple draft picks to Buffalo, and Buffalo sends Cheese to Indy. But that will never happen. Buffalo won't let him go for picks without a player, and Saban is hoarding all the Dolphin draft picks.

I can't blame him for wanting to holdout, but it's gonna kill his career. Holdouts always do. You just can't afford that much time away from the game and expect to be at the same level (ask Maurice Clarett). Then there's always the possibility of being more succeptable to injury after returning (ask Heath Shuler).

I was thinking, what did he do exactly to lose his job in buffalo? ESPN was saying he was a threat to break 2,000 yards rushing last year, then all of a sudden he started losing carries. Proably why buffalo sucks so bad. bet they don't win 6 games this year.

I've heard that as well. Although it would be pretty sweet to see henry as th guy who carries the team knowing that everybody on the team is pretty crappy. :flush:

The Cards are trying to improve themselves in the offseason, and were almost a playoff team last year, and would have been had Denny Green not pulled McCown just when he was starting to develop any kind of rhythm.

They have Kurt Warner, and though he's past his prime, he's the best they've had since Jake left town and he did have the Giants in th eplayoff hunt early before being benched so you have to give him some credit. If Cheese ends up there, it would be a pretty good fit, as he'll have to carry the ball quite a bit to take the heat off of Warner, who is not a scrambler by any means.

Also, one thing I've always believed is that if you're a starter, you should never lose your job due to an injury. But everyone saw the writing on the wall when the Bills drafted McGahee. Travis had to run like his life depended on it. His job did. The injury just gave the Bills a convenient way of prmoting their investment in McGahee to a starting position. There was a good article about Travis and this situation on SI.com, I'll try to find it. They're reall complimentary to Henry, and actually applaud him for not being classless and talking about it while the season was still going on last year.

He did not break his leg until late in the season. He started the first 4 games, and his number weren't that bad....

GM#
1 started, 84 total yards
2 started, 77 tot yds
3 started, 108 tot yds
4 started, 33 rush yds (injured in this game)

5 missed due to injury

6 started, only 7 rush attempts while McGahee got 16 carries

7 demoted, only 1 rush attempt
8 4 rushes
9 0 rushes
10 2 rushes
11 0 rushes

12-16 missed due to injury

Even while Henry started, McGahee was getting alot of carries. The first game, WM got 9 carries... the 2nd game 2 carries for -3 yards.... the 3rd game (and ironically Henry's best of the season) 0 carries... and 4th game 8 carries. While Henry was injured in the 5th game, WM did not split carries as Henry had done before and got 26 carries for 111 yards. The 6th game, he still got 16 carries as a backup. But when Henry went to backup and WM started, .... Henry got hardly any carries while WM got
7 30 carries for 102 yards
8 37 carries for 132 yds
9 14 att for 37 yds
10 20 att for 100 yds
11 28 att for 116 yds
12 23 att for 91 yds
13 27 att for 105 yds
14 11 att for 25 yds
15 15 att for 102 yds
16 18 att for 97 yds

And this after back-to-back 1300+ yard rushing seasons. The Bills have a history of screwing themselves. Remember when Doug Flutie was winning games. But they wanted a bigger more athletic quarterback because Flutie was old and didn't fit the NFL mold. They went with Rob Johnson. RJ sucked then and he still sucks. All Flutie has ever done is win games everywhere he's gone. He's got the intangibles.... not always pretty, but he wins.

If McGahee's stats for his 11 starts were extrapolated over a 16 game season, he would have 362 attempts for 1,455 yards (90 ypg) .... while Henry's first 3 games (before first injury) are not far off at 362 attempts for 1,291 yds (80 ypg). Not a typical Henry season, but still decent.

Henry's previous 2 seasons ... 325 attempts for 1,438 yards (89.9 ypg) in 2003 and 331 attempts for 1,356 yards (90.4 ypg) in 2004.

Based on previous history in Buffalo, I fully expect Henry to end up somewhere next season as a 1300-yard rusher.... while McGahee struggles through a mediocre season.
