Curious to hear thoughts on this, the only other P5 coach I can recall seeing berate his assistants on the sideline like this is Saban. I think it's a good way to lose your team.

Context: UAB had 12 men on the field during a 4th & 3 punt, resulting in a 1st down. Apparently he's giving it to the ST coach and the DC in this video. UAB lost 35-23 (now 1-4 this year).

I have no problem with the basic idea that he's chewing someone out for a mistake.

However, there's a way to do it and this isn't it. As the head man, you are also supposed to be the level-headed one when everyone else is flustered emotionally.

Also, it will cause problems because it shows a large lack of respect. Whoever these guys are, they are probably hearing it from other people that they should have turned around and knocked Trent the hell out.

So, getting upset and letting them know about it....yes. Doing it the way I see in the video. Hell no.

I wouldn't be surprised if after the game, in a private moment, one of these coaches told him, "you do that to me again in that kind of display publicly and I'm gonna knock you the **** out"

Not surprised at this. He did this once, maybe more, when he was a Lipscomb. Dilfer's coaching is very similar to Dion's. They are the HC but let the asst run the program. Dilfer will stand about the 20 yrd line away from the players with his mic in the air. Only steps in when its absolutely have to.

Heupel would be saying a lot of the same things, but sometimes it is how you say what has to be said.

A first year coach doing this is probably setting himself up for a short tenure. You've got to recruit with these guys and build the program together. That's not going to happen if they view you as an overreacting hothead.

If you’re the head coach and have to act like that to get someone to listen to you, you are not doing it right.
