The college game has mostly been at its best whenever a team has a true dual threat QB. Look at some the Vols over the years and the success they had with Shuler...Martin...Holloway....Streater....Hooker.......
Dobbs.....just to name a few. The ability to scramble and create another option is valuable.

I do think you have a point about this offense specifically (less so about college in general). PFF had a stat predraft and it was something like, Hooker had only thrown to his second read or beyond less than times all season. So if the first guy isn’t there, tuck and take what you can get

You have to be a good passer and reader of D also. It does help to have above average speed. But you can’t just be a great runner and average at best passer. A quarterback that can process fast and deliver the ball can do just fine. Again doesn’t hurt to have above average speed and great instincts. Fast or just average speed if your slow to read coverage and can’t look off recievers you aren’t going to get it done. Instincts and the ability to read D and process things quickly are the most important things along with being a pretty accurate passer.GBO

Hooker was a passer first who happened to have legs. You have to able to stand in a collapsing pocket and deliver the football and then when the play breaks down take off
True. But that pocket is collapsing far too quickly right now. Hooker struggled when his line lost in the trenches as badly as our current line did in the FL game.

Hooker was good in getting yards in the open…he couldn’t naturally cut and ultimately got him.

I’m not sure what your comment has to do with the OP. Hooker was absolutely a dual threat quarterback with a number of design quarterback, runs in the game plan every week.

I'd argue it's a necessity in today's game

There were also times Milton had time and a few times were he waited to long and the pocket starting closing and he couldn’t get away. Milton should be running more to help open up some passing opportunities. But he doesn’t act like he wants to run and that is a shame. It is the one thing right now that might help his game. But your either a gamer or not. I don’t know if Joe has it in him to spread em out and then take off. Why not some designed runs? Probably because they have figured out Joe is not the best runner. But a man with his size and ability could make it a asset if he was tough minded enough. What DB wants to tackle a 245 pound man at full speed? If he could turn it upfield 5-6-7 times a game defenses would have to adjust their thinking.

I'm saying being an elite passer is much more important than being an elite runner in this offense. Hooker was an elite passer and a pretty good runner but running was secondary to the passing. Milroe, Nick Marshall, etc. Are more elite runners than passers.
