An Auburn University student called into the Paul Finebaum radio sports talk show today and said he was going to poison the trees around Bryant-Denny Stadium. An hour later a 19 year old was arrested by Tuscaloosa Police who were acting on an anonymous tip. The youth, identified as an Auburn psychology major, was caught with an unknown herbicide in his possession. He told the arresting officers he had used it on a total of 17 trees. After the student showed the police each location he had applied the herbicide, the Tuscaloosa police chief issued the following statement: “It appears that all of the telephone poles affected will survive.”

I heard a better one:

A fan of Auburn University athletics has been arrested in Tuscaloosa, AL. He was caught by University of Alabama security officers while attempting to commit an act of vandalism believed to be in retaliation for the poisoning of the oaks at Toomer's Corner. A University spokesperson praised the officers for their diligence, and reassured the community that the herbicide is unlikely to affect Coach Bryant's statue.
