So to put it lightly things haven't gone exactly how we wanted today. I had some time here at work and decided to look at the last few drafts and compare some of the bigger name players that went in the first round to the "stars" given to them by the "all-knowing" powers at rivals. It's actually interesting seeing how many of those players were 2 and 3 star rated players that went on to be 1st round draft picks.

I know I'm reaching; but like the title says, I'm trying to put a positive spin on today. There is hope!!

Did you also compare how many 4 and 5 star players are going off in the NFL? I'm pretty sure there are more of them than two and three star guys.

My complaint is not the fact that we got several 3 star players or the fact that we only have 18 recruits. With having 32 last year we really don't need any more than 20 or so.

Where I have a problem is that we haven't filled much needed positions like the Def. Line. We did get a couple of DE's but we need DT's. We got one in Hughes which I think is a good pick up, but he is probably 2 years or more away from contributing due to going to prep school or JUCO.

We really needed DT's. Alabama has like 5 and are probably going to get more. You would think these guys would wanna come where they could get early playing time!

Yeah, we really dropped the ball on some of our "needs." But one positive thing I can think of is that we got like 4 or 5 guys mentioned in the Scout Super Sleepers list. The guy was talking about 3 star guys he would select to build a team to compete for a national championship around. So at least that's a somewhat bright spot amongst all this garbage.

I have often believed that opportunity for immediate playing time is a huge draw, primarily because you hear so many kids say that is something that they look at. However, I am starting to wonder if there are certain positions where kids want depth. Imagine that you are a highly rated DT and you go to a school with very little depth at the position. You are going to get worn out. The chances of injury will go up exponentially because you will probably have to play tired quite a bit. Now, suppose you go to a school with plenty of depth at DT. Your sack & tackle #s will go down but you will still have an opportunity to display your technique and ability for the NFL scouts and you have less chance of getting injured.

I think you have a very good point. This could have something to do with it. At least it offers some explanation with what went wrong with us this year when we needed to fill these positions and haven't.

As long as there isn't any serious injuries at DT next year we should be ok. Bolden, Williams, Langley, Fisher, and Nelson will hold that down. DE should be fine barring injury too. Ayers, Brown, Martin, Walker, and Gerald Williams if he doesn't stay at LB(I don't think he will). Also, Sykes and Hall come in from JUCO and Hall was an All American DT his freshmen year at JUCO. Rufus Williams should be coming in next year, so we aren't really that dry on the DL, we just need some people to produce.

There was an article I posted here that put that myth to bed.

A couple of economics guys used a model that had a 70% success rate for predicting where the Rivals Top 100 recruits would go and it shot that theory down.
I'll find it again.

Is Sykes and Hall suppose to make it for next season 2008?

You dont recruit DT to play their first year, if you are then you are really in trouble, You recruit them for 2 or 3 years down the road when they are stronger and have had some coaching. Yes we needed a couple atleast this year for down the road. I know we are getting some guys back next year, but there is no guarantee that they will come back, you hope so, and they probably will, but they may not also when the time comes. You recruit for your need today, theres no guarantee of tommorrow. A bird in hand is better than 2 in the bush.

I didn't compare that. I know there are a number of those, but I was pretty suprised to see how many 2-3 star players were going so high. Ex: AJ Hawk was a 3 star LB out of HS, and was a top 10 pick. Just caught me off guard.

I realize that we had needs, and everyone was saying that this class was not going to be about recruiting ranking but on meeting our needs; and we didn't do that. Hopefully it caught more than just this boards attention that Clemson, a school we regularly compete fairly decently with for players, absolutely throttled us. The same can be said for Bama/ UGA/ and FL. There is something to be said about players not wanting to come to a school where they are needed, and instead signing with a school that is also signing 4 other players at that same position.

And the consistency on the other end of the ball has to also be weighed. If I'm a DT, and I think that the Offense is going to keep me on the field for an extended period of time.... coupled with very thin ranks? I don't like those figures.

And you know that has been whispered in those guys' ears especially since Cut made his announcement.

I've heard more than one coach say that DT is the toughest position to recruit.
