This just came out through Clay Travis on the radio, it looks like Nike, no I mean, Oregon has offered Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith the job.

Would be a good hire, but listening to local talk radio today has that as "uncertain" at best. I could still see it happening, though.

One thing is for sure, there will be about 5-6 coaches when this is all said and done who can thank Knight and UofO for nice, fat contract extensions.

that seems more their level than the other people they are going after.

It does seem like the right level, but I'm still not convinced its the right fit. Nike University (which Oregon self admittedly is), is IMO, looking for someone that will lead that school the "elite" status. By that I don't neccesarily mean just winning, but the status of the school. With Nike backing so much of whats going on there, they will be looking to land the elite prospects, the Nike prospects, which are the one and done type players that can be marketed afterward.

Tubby Smith obviously struggled with that type of recruiting even at Kentucky (With the exception of one good class).

He is a hell of a coach and a class act. However, even though I certainly think he can/will win Pac-10 titles, I'm not sold that Tubby Ball is suitable for the idea that Oregon has in mind.

However, I could be completely wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

Thoughts? Your obviously more in tune with Pac-10 happenings and thought process than I am.

i'm not of the belief that oregon in either sports will ever have an elite program baring lucking out with a great coach. eugene is no recruiting magnet and the state of oregon doesn't have a lot of players. you'll get the occasional guy who is blown away by the xboxes and flatscreens and hte nike crap, but that isn't enough to build an elite program. kent probably recruited as well as anyone could to that location. problem is the guy was a lousy coach. as for tubby i don't think he's going to put the fear in the rest of hte pac-10. in reality they should probably try to hire a young coach and hope it's a home run.

The Plus: Oregon would not have to worry about impropriety on the AAU level because Tubster refuses to kiss butt

The Minus:Oregon would not have to worry about impropriety on the AAU level because Tubster refuses to kiss butt.
