I don't even know why I attempt to watch some of these network shows anymore. Networks flat fricking refuse to give shows time to build an audience for the most part.
I just learned this week that my favorite network show Life on Mars is getting canned. Well, first off, they take the show off the air for a couple of months. Then, when they bring it back, they change its night as well. Its a 10:00 PM show so its not going to get the mega ratings anyway. This was one of the most well thought out shows I have seen in a long time on network TV. I was really into all of the main characters and genuinally liked them. Jason O'Mara, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperiola, and Gretchen Mol were all great in their roles on this show. It had so much potential to go in so many different directions yet they yank it. The same thing has happened to other good network shows over the last few years like Eli Stone, Jericho, and many others.
It sickens me that TV as we knew it is slowly dying out. I guess they will replace this with yet another stupid reality show. How many reality shows do we really need on TV? I'll admit I watch a couple myself - I like Hells Kitchen, The Next Food Network Star, and Big Brother. But I don't consume myself with reality garbage - I have to have it in small doses. They are killing a favorite network of mine - TV Land - with that God awful High Scool Reunion show and now they are getting ready to launch The Cougar where a bunch of young dudes chase after a 45 year old woman.
No networks anymore want to give shows time to bloom like they used to. In 10 years I can't imagine how much worse it will be. It seems like each time a clever show comes on the air it gets axed because they actually make people think a little. I just discovered a Fox show from the late 90s called Brimstone that lasted all of 13 episodes. That show was waaaaaay ahead of its time and was such a well written show I can't believe it didn't make it. Then I see it was buried on Friday nights and had horrible ratings. The networks have been doing this for several years now but it continues to get worse and worse.
I swear what I'm going to start doing is not watching ANY new network show on the air until its made it to at least season 3. Then I will get the DVD's and catch up so I don't continue to be disappointed when good shows I actually like get dropped. Sorry for the rant but this is just really beginning to bother me.
