As of 11AM, 4-13:

#1 Football (265,518)
#2 MBB (84,289)
#3 Softball (40,481)
#4 WBB (36,619)
#5 Baseball (34,099)
----------------------------------------------
#6 Volleyball (6,624)
#7 W Soccer (5,892)
#8 Swimming & Diving (4,599)
#9 Track & Field (4,216)
#10 M Tennis (3,529)
#11 M Golf (2,210)
#12 W Golf (1,977)
#13 Rowing (1,659)
#14 W Tennis (1,628)

No surprise that FB has the most following followed by the distant 2nd place MBB. But the third place belongs to Softball not WBB! That's a little surprise, isn't it? Not surprisingly FB, MBB, SB, WBB & Baseball are the top 5 most popular sports on campus according to Twitter following with each sport over 30K followers to claim. After these 5 sports, the drop-off is significant with the 6th place VB claiming a little less than 7K followers. The three least popular sports seem to be Women's Golf, Rowing and Women's Tennis..

I don't claim to know anything about Twitter following, but factors to be considered re softball being third might be roster size (softball rosters are typically at least 18 players and often 20 or more), and television exposure. The SEC network has helped but not everybody is going to tune in to SEC+ online to watch a game that might otherwise tune into ESPN to watch a game. With respect to women's bball, the crowd is almost entirely the grandma and grandpa set, who I doubt use Twitter. Softball has younger fans for whatever reason. Just a couple of ideas.

Unprecedented TV exposure due to the SEC Network plus greater number of younger generation drawn to the game of SB/current SB explosion at the grass roots were some of my thoughts too. Alabama softball twitter page has nearly 65K following after 1 national title and 10 WCWS appearances & Florida SB has over 52K following after back-to-back national titles and 7 WCWS appearances, so the winning obviously plays a big role as well. The fun sexy promo videos put out by Alabama SB (see below) right after it won a national championship didn't hurt IMO. :)

Wait until our girls win a national title and produce a video or two of the above quality, then the SB popularity will be off the charts in this part of country. :) Home attendance will easily go over 3K and we need to construct outfield bleachers to accommodate the extra seats.

softball is in season, duh!

Not exactly. SB has had more twitter following than WBB for some time by now. From what I can tell, it's been like that for well over a year. I call this "Holly Effect"; as long as Holly Warlick is on Rocky Top as HC, the popularity of WBB program will decline and the number of (twitter) followers will dwindle whereas the strong SB program will continually pick up more fan support and become the marquee female sport on campus.
