1) Timeouts only allowed when ball is not in play. Eliminates the ability to defeat a great defensive situation by calling a live ball timeout. In play starts when the ball is handed to the player by the official to throw it in or when the player picks up the ball after a made basket (thus ball is not in play from time basket is made until time a player picks it up). Would also mean no saving inbound 5 second calls with a timeout. I think basketball is the only sport where you can defeat the defense by calling a timeout.

2) No resetting of 10 second timing due to a dead ball. Just pick up the count when the ball is put back in play. Use the play clock to time the 10 seconds from the clock operator.

I like that idea. It awards the defense for good play.

In the three years of watching basketball since I started this thread I have come up with a few more:

2) Eliminate 10 sec rule to get to half court and eliminate backcourt violations. With a play clock now standard, these are obsolete rules. Offense can use the whole court just like in hockey, soccer, lacrosse, etc. Note: this replaces my original #2 in the opening post.

3) Held ball is a turnover. Last team to have possession loses the ball. Need to reward the team that played good defense.

4) Number of available timeouts is the same, but each team can only use 1 in the last minute. Gotta find a way to make the last minute play as close to the quality of the rest of the game and this is one idea I think could do that. Also makes the coach think a little bit about when best to use that one.

5) No consecutive timeouts during a dead ball by the same team. For example, you can't call timeout, see how the defense lines up, then call timeout again. Again, trying to make those last few minutes be of the same quality as the rest of the game.

6) Overtime team and individual statistics are not included in the official game statistics. Purpose of overtime is to find a winner as soon as possible, not to extend the total game concept. Retroactively go pull all overtime stats from the existing records. This applies to all sports, not just basketball.

7) Eliminate the ceremonial opening tip. Just give the ball side-out midcourt to the home team. Granted, I really don't care about this one that much. It just logically fits in with the rest of them.

8) Free Throws awarded for shooting fouls only. When fouled when not shooting, the fouled team gets an uncontested throw-in from midcourt into the backcourt. A third idea to make the last few minutes of the game play out with the same quality as the rest of the game. Plus, fouling someone when they are shooting takes away their opportunity to make their shot. So giving them freethrows is logical there. Fouling someone when not shooting only takes away their opportunity to continue their possession. So they should only get that possession restored, not uncontested opportunity for points. Disclaimer: This one has an opportunity to blow up in my face - may be scenarios where teams just foul continuously if game appears lost to them with no hope.

I would add that I think they should do away with the 2 shot fouls after 10 team fouls. One and one's after 7 fouls and force guys to make FT's the way it used to be.

I would also like to see no more NCAA games in domed football stadiums. Ridiculous that the SEC would play basketball in the Georgia Dome or Super Dome. Then playing NCAA regionals and finals at Ford Field or Lucas Oil Stadium or Jerry Jones ridiculous monstrosity is moronic.

To Number 3, how bout just jumping it up like the NBA? That is the most logical thing to do.

The defense does get rewarded. The head coach of the opposing team loses a timeout. That's huge.

The last one is stretching it a bit. I hate a lot of the hand check fouls at end game situations but a lot of games are won on the line in close ones like that. Memphis probably would of won two national titles if their freethrows wasn't so horrible so it forces you to have a more all around game.

ehh. A short defender basically gets an at-a-boy for getting the tie-up. I don't really like the actual jump ball unless both people are accurately matched-up. It seems like it's generally a lopsided tip.

Correct.

Why does this matter?

we need the same break away rule the NBA has where a foul on a fast break with no defender results in one free throw and the ball back.

Correct.

Why does this matter?

IMO, even though it brings in more people it doesn't make for good basketball as they are trying to play in a 70k seat football stadium.

I think the atmosphere and play would be much much better if they played in an actual basketball arena. Would be smaller, but much louder and less bad play and shooting because of the monstrous backgrounds behind the rims.

ESPECIALLY the SEC tourney should never be played in a dome. Nothing like watching Auburn and South Carolina play the 9pm game on Thursday night at the GA dome with maybe 300 people in a 75k seat stadium.
