Two Vols made JC Shurburtt's (247) True Freshman All-American Watch list

Jalen Hurd, RB, Tennessee

Hurd gives the Vols a power running threat and if he can stay healthy and get his share of carries, the in-state talent is physically ready to pile up yardage as a true freshman. Hurd’s first season in Knoxville could play out a number of different ways, but right now, the prediction is he makes a big impact.

Josh Malone, WR, Tennessee

Hurd’s fellow in-state Vols freshman, Malone already has made an impact- impressing during the spring game and pushing for a starting position during his first year. Much like Marquez North last season, Malone could be one of the top weapons for Tennessee’s offense this season.

Personally, Hurd looks like a beast and I can't wait for him to don the orange, but this kid missed his entire senior season due to injury. I hope he goes off this year, but I just hope this type of pre-season acknowledgement doesn't go to his head.

Shurburtt just went down 247's list of 4*/5* players that had a chance to see the field some as a TR FR and went for that.

Moseley doesn't qualify since he was merely a 3* like Sutton was last year.

IF I could pick only two freshmen in this class those two are who I'd pick also on offense. It should be no surprise to anyone about those two player's potential that's before them this year.

Mike Farrell rated Jalen Hurd #5 on his "Five who will make an impact: SEC"

As a five-star running back who signed with the home-state school, expectations were always going to be high for Hurd, but the buzz has only increased since he arrived in Knoxville this past January. Head coach Butch Jones has done nothing to temper the expectations heaped on his highly-touted back, offering "Jalen Hurd has been consistent everyday," over the weekend and suggesting Hurd can handle those expectations. At 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, Hurd is definitely a unique prospect at his position. Height is often an obstacle for running backs to overcome, but Hurd runs with great pad level and he is more than a power back, showing plenty of shake and speed to be effective on the edge. Senior Marlin Lane is expected to be listed as the starter throughout the season for the Volunteers, but do not be surprised if Hurd logs as many touches as Lane by season's end. -- Josh Helmholdt, Midwest recruiting analyst

Hurd is a big, upright running back with excellent quickness, good shake and the ability to bounce off tackles. Coming off a few injuries, there will be some question about his durability, but the Vols need help at running back and need a big play guy and Hurd fits the mold. One of the biggest in-state recruits Tennessee has landed in the last few years, you can bet Hurd will get his chances early. -- Farrell

I would imagine that's more of an issue for a guy who names himself cockey than for a kid who most everyone around him says is unusually humble. I'm not saying, just sayin.
