Need more details on what university is doing - shoddy reporting IMHO

The Chronicles of Higher Education has a much better article:

U. of Florida Dean Proposes Plan for Computer Dept. to Focus on Teaching, Not Research - Faculty - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Its NOT a case of athletics versus academics. Its a case of whether the UF should be emphasizing research or teaching in computer science within the Engineering School. Eliminating the department saves money and will make it harder to attract top caliber CS researchers in the future. But if the department isn't that great to begin with and other engineering departments within UF are far superior, the proposal makes sense.

CS seems like an odd choice for a great academic university to cut back on. CS grads make good money, and it's a field that's not going away. Technology and computers are not going to disappear.

Florida knows that this whole internet thing is just a fad. But college football has survived 2 world wars, the great depression and tear-away jerseys.

Headline is what is intended to get people going. Athletics over science. Facts are not important.

This.

Nowhere in that article does it mention how UF's athletic department donates approximately $6 million to the university annually.

But clearly UF is the only state university on the planet suffering through budget cuts.
