The Univ. of Florida has saved $1.7M in costs by cutting their Computer Science Department while at the same time increasing their athletic budget nearly $2M.

Its NOT a case of athletics versus academics. Its a case of whether the UF should be emphasizing research or teaching in computer science within the Engineering School. Eliminating the department saves money and will make it harder to attract top caliber CS researchers in the future. But if the department isn't that great to begin with and other engineering departments within UF are far superior, the proposal makes sense.

CS seems like an odd choice for a great academic university to cut back on. CS grads make good money, and it's a field that's not going away. Technology and computers are not going to disappear.
