Whether big man Eloy Vargas plays for Florida next season now rests in the hands of the NCAA.
Vargas, one of the highly touted members of Florida's incoming 2008 basketball recruiting class, had his academic record sent to the NCAA Clearinghouse, the final step toward ensuring his eligibility for the upcoming season.
"It's looking pretty good," said Danny Herz, Vargas' high school coach at American Heritage. "He's completed everything. He got the test score. His core (course) requirements are done.
"We sent off his material at graduation. We're confident. He did well academically."
NCAA spokesperson Stacey Osborn could not specifically comment on Vargas' case, citing confidentiality agreements. Osborn said that of 65,000 athletes that compete at the Division I and II level, 90 percent are automatically cleared. That leaves the agency to review the roughly 6,500 remaining cases based on amateurism and academic guidelines.
Osborn also couldn't give a timeline for when Vargas would be cleared.
"It's really a case-by-case basis," Osborn said. "We try to do whatever we can to make sure no one misses practice time or competition, but we also must review individual records."
Vargas, 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds, was the 12th-ranked power forward in the nation according to Scout.com and is a key member of a 2008 recruiting class that's ranked from second-to-fifth in the country by most national analysts.
The remaining class includes 6-9 center Kenny Kadji, 5-8 point guard Erving Walker, 6-4 guard Ray Shipman and 6-8 forward Allan Chaney. All five are expected to arrive on campus for the second summer session, which starts June 22.
Vargas is eligible to enroll in summer school before the NCAA Clearinghouse makes its decision.
"He's excited to get up there," Herz said. "He needs to get up there to start on his conditioning and his workouts."
Florida is looking forward to Vargas arriving as well, considering the status of current sophomore center Marreese Speights is in limbo.

Kindof a negative slant with the title there isn't it, Rex?
