cal preview

By Pete Fiutak

A skeptical nation still wants more.

There's no East Coast media bias when it comes to college football, but there's an ignorance. After all, is anyone outside of the Pacific time zone able to get Pac 10 games on TV? How many writers and fans are going to stay up for the late night games after a full day of other big college football battles?

The fact of the matter is that outside of USC, it's hard for most to have any clue what the Pac 10 is doing, but there continues to be this Cal football program that makes a lot of noise and is very interesting. But no one ever gets to see it play.

There was some national respect a few years ago for being the last team before Texas to beat USC, and then ESPN cranked things up another notch by going on and on about how good Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Bears were after a loss to the Trojans. Once again, though, no one actually watched Cal football until the Holiday Bowl loss to Texas Tech, and by then the SEC, Big Ten parts of the world felt like they were right all along to not respect the rumor that was the Bears.

Heck, J.J. Arrington ran for 2,000 yards and barely got more than a "hey, that's neat" from the Heisman voters. Last year, Cal exited the national consciousness with an early loss to UCLA on the way to a respectable 8-4 record, but 2005 was a mere transition season to this year when all the parts should come together when the program finally shows the world how good it is.

There are few teams with more speed among the starters with an array of talents that would litter the All-America lists if it played in one of the other BCS conferences. DT Brandon Mebane, CB Daymeion Hughes and LB Desmond Bishop will be among the best in the nation at their respective positions, and RB Marshawn Lynch deserves Heisman consideration from day one.

The quarterback situation will sort itself out with Nate Longshore ready to steady the four-man race, Lynch and Justin Forsett combine to form one of the nation's top tailback duos, and the receivers might not be the best in America, but they're in the top three when it comes to speed.

The defense will be a sack machine with too many good ends for one team, Mebane an all-star in the middle, and one of the best linebacking corps in the nation. The slight concerns are on the offensive line and at safety, but those won't turn out to be any big deal as the season goes on.

So now it's up to the college football world to pay attention. The opening day game at Tennessee will be a make-or-break game for national respect, but even a loss shouldn't mean anyone should dismiss this potential Pac 10 champion. Head coach Jeff Tedford has assembled a potential monster going into his sixth season and it'll be one of the nation's most fun teams week in and week out.

Hopefully, everyone will finally be watching.

The Schedule: The opener at Tennessee to start the season will be the high-profile battle everyone will focus on, but the following week's game against Minnesota should be just as entertaining. The Pac 10 slate starts off nasty playing Arizona State in what might be an elimination game in the title race followed up by at Oregon State, Oregon, and at an improved Washington State. However, if Cal really is as good as expected, being unbeaten going into the late season road trip to USC should be a distinct possibility.

Best Offensive Player: Junior RB Marshawn Lynch. He won't have the same great line he enjoyed last year, but he should still be a threat to flirt with the 2,000-yard mark. If he can stay healthy, watch his draft stock soar with his combination of size, quickness and production.

Best Defensive Player: Senior DT Brandon Mebane. The 306-pound senior is one of the best interior pass rushers in America and will be the rock of the defensive front seven. He has a chance of taking over where Oregon's Haloti Ngata left off as the nation's best tackle.

Key player to a successful season: Sophomore OT Mike Tepper. The line should be fine, but only two starters return with the loss of C Marvin Philip and T Ryan O'Callaghan particularly hurting. Tepper is 6-6, 334-pound talent who should make a big splash this season if he can stay healthy. He needs to be a rock in pass protection to keep Nate Longshore, or whoever is playing quarterback, healthy.

The season will be a success if ... Cal wins the Pac 10 title. It's time to take that next step up. It might be asking a lot to win the championship with a game at USC to worry about, but the Bears are good enough to dream big.

Key game: September 2nd. At Tennessee. The Vols might still be reeling from last year's disaster, but if Cal can go into Knoxville and come up with a win, that would set the tone for the entire season and might finally get the rest of the nation to start going out of its way to watch what should be one of the nation's best teams. A loss to Tennessee and fans will dismiss the Pac 10 as that conference that plays past they bedtimes.

2005 Fun Stats:
- Fourth quarter scoring: California 115 - Opponents 56
- Penalties: Opponents 82 for 670 yards - California 69 for 620 yards
- Interception return average: California 26.1 yards on 15 picks - Opponents 3.4 yards on 17 picks

Have they decided on a QB yet? I know they had a couple in the mix last season and we all know how well that works.

they are projecting nate longshore to be the starter but they said that all four of their qb's will have an equal chance

Found this on CBS. It sounds like there may still be a question. After seeing UT, that kind of talk wouldn't make me comfortable. Our d-line stopping the RB may be the key.

On a side note, I'm glad UT schedules these games. It's good to be able to see lots of different teams.

Nate Longshore started last season but suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the first half of the first game. The redshirt sophomore has recovered and tops the spring depth chart, but he still has a lot to prove and a lot of competition to hold off.

Joe Ayoob was the starter for most of last season, but he struggled and gave way late in the season to Steve Levy, who was efficient if not spectacular in leading the Bears to two wins to end the season -- over Stanford and BYU. Both players return.

Ayoob got off to a good start in spring practice and impressed head coach Jeff Tedford with his performance. "You could certainly see Joe Ayoob's game experience come into play," Tedford said. "He was very comfortable in the huddle and with the speed of the game."

And redshirt freshman Kyle Reed from Oakland now gets thrown into the mix as well.

"The spring is really important for Nate and Kyle," Tedford said. "Joe and Steve really gained some experience last season and Nate and Kyle didn't have that opportunity. We are really anxious to see those two develop during the spring."

if anyone thought that Cal would be an easy game....raise your hands?

....if you did, you were wrong...i've been saying it...this game is a huge game.....we should know pretty well after the first game if this team is any better, win or lose.

i'm glad we have this tough of a NON CONFERENCE GAME this early in the season.....

Tennessee wins comfortably. If not, brace yourself for 7-5 or 6-6, with me calling for the hiring of Butch Davis on an hourly basis.

No kidding . . . If you don't think Cal will bring a good team to Knoxville, then you haven't been paying attention.

I wouldn't put that game in the make or break category, but we definitely MUST show some continuity on offense.

you should do it "on the 7s" like the local forecast on the Weather Channel.

The Pac-10 is so overrated. The only great team in it last year was USC and they beat Cal by 25 points. If Cal was playing in the SEC east, they would have losses to Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and to a west team like Bama, LSU, or Auburn if they played them. The SEC is a whole lot better then the Pac-10. These statistics dont scare me at all.

i think the sec is better but the pac-10 does have 4 or 5 legitamate top 25 teams
cal,ucla,usc,oregon and arz st.

scared or not, Cal isn't gonna suck. Pac 10 or not (and i do think that the Pac 10 is weaker than the SEC generally speaking), Cal is going to be one of the top 3 teams in that conference i would bet.

this is a good early test, and things in our favor are:
1. it's at home, they lose 3 hours on the trip.
2. it'll be sticky hot for the N. Cal boys
3. we should play pissed off at the world

I think we should/will win, but make no mistake, Cal will want that game. it would give them a huge chunk of respect in the polls to go to an SEC school, down or not, and win.

so for anyone that thought pac 10=easy win, i would agree with you if it was Wsh st or Arizona. This team is no slouch.

It's a different style than most SEC fans are used to. There is some very good ball played on the left coast. The thing is, most people out here just don't watch it.

I say that if we win against Cal we will go undefeated up until Georgia, and have an overall record of 9-4 or maybe 10-3. But, if we lose to Cal, IMO, we will go 6-7 or 7-6. The California game in my opinion will motivate our team in either a good way or bad way for the rest of the season

I just don't see the Cal game as being such a monumental litmus test that it will dictate the fate of our season. Cal is a good team that will provide a tough test in the opener . . . nothing more; nothing less. We could win and end up 7-5 and we could lose and end up 10-2. If you want a litmus test, I think how we play is almost as important as whether we win or not.

I for one am glad that Cal is actually getting some respect heading into the season. Gives our guys more of a reason to pay attention to this game and gives us a bigger boost in the polls after we dispose of Cal in our opener.

The California game is a sensational opener for our Vols. I'm eager to see our Vols run through that T once again.

I will be there clothed in my orange and white, supporting our coaches and players with a ceaseless enthusiasm.
