UM Willie Williams to Tennessee?

He'll be at Louisville. No way we take him, even though he could start from day 1 next year. Too big of a risk.

We all see on this board everyday what happens when we take on Miami's riff raff.

Wasn't Miami and Florida State in the equivalent of a bidding war for this dude? Wha' happened?

But with Fulmer being the superb coach that he is, he can turn this kid around. He will make a model citizen out of him.

If my memory serves me, this guy has a significant rap sheet and even the fans down there at "Thug U" questioned the wisdom of signing Williams. Supposedly he has kept his nose clean since being at Miami, which would be a good sign of growth and maturity and possibly make him worth taking a chance on since his football skills are unquestioned as far as I know. However, there is some speculation that his nose really isn't that clean and Miami is just being nice by releasing him because they want him out of there. I have only seen/heard circumstantial evidence to support this theory, that being:
(1) Miami would never agree to release him if he is keeping on the straight and narrow; and
(2) He would be listed as a starter if he is living up to his potential.

Who knows what the real story is. IMO one starting LB is probably not worth the risk.

Digging around, I found a couple things to update the Williams story.

The UM president Donna Shalala actually posted an open letter when the 'Canes admitted him. An excerpt...

FULL TEXT

This is hardly a perfect applicant to the University. Oh, how we love perfection--perfect grades, perfect character, and perfect recommendations. Those are the easy ones! This young man is not perfect and has made some bad decisions--in friends, in behavior, etc. However, he is young, and his file reveals academic talent as well as the better-known athletic ability...

As to his on field abilities, The Sun-Sentinel offered this discussion with UM's defensive coordinator in 2005...

How is Willie doing with his game preparation?
"He's doing great. He really is doing good," and Shannon, who all you blog followers should know is a straight shooter. "That's why you see him come into games in the first and second quarter making plays. We just go into a rotation and try to get everybody a certain amount of plays, then we rotate [to the second string, which Willie is amongst as a weakside linebacker, playing behind Beason], a certain amount of plays, then we rotate. But when people start doing all that nickel stuff then now his reps have just gotten cut. But it's not like Willie ain't doing his job. That's just how it is."
Now, to sum it up for you, is Willie a bust? Certainly not. Coker's already told you he's ahead of where D.J. Williams was at this stage of his career [he's referring to first season of playing, not second year in the program considering D.J. was the starting linebacker UM's national championship team his second season].

Da Predator sounds like a mountain of question marks to me...

I can see it now " Another UT F.B. player busted ,3:00 a.m. , loud music, resisting arrest, under the influence , shooting a gun and last of if not least punching out a guy in a pick - up b-ballgame ". Go ahead and bring on another thug. Just what the program needs.

Right, because the University of Tennessee has mentioned already that we're going to pick up Willie Williams. C'mon you can't get upset about something the school hasn't done nor mentioned.

It was nothing more than a rumor.

Neither UT nor the coaches would have accepted Williams.

the reality is that kids make mistakes, Lord knows, we've all made several

Amen brother. Too bad we tend to take the holier than thou attitudes when one of our precious athletes steps across the line. If someone didn't give me a second chance, who knows where I would be today.

I am all about second chances but the kid has 11 entries on his arrest record. At what point do you need to earn your right to a major college football program. Let him play D2 or something and keep his nose clean. Plus, if he didn't start at The U than what makes him a starter at UT? I think our linebackers can stand up pretty good against Miami's (I realize this point was made earlier, just reinforcement).

Has Willie Williams been in trouble since he was at Miami? Obviously his record in high school was pretty heavily publicized, but I don't believe he's been in trouble while a Hurricane. Perhaps he's matured, but it seems that there are too many people who won't look past this.

Don't forget, Randy Moss got kicked out of Florida State (impossible, I know) because he kept screwing up after being given multiple chances.
