Policing the Internet? They obviously underestimate the power of an army of nerds.

I shudder to think that some may actually be in favor of such regulations. But hey! Change may be a good thing afterall. Plus it would help protect state secrets. And there are those darn virtual terrorists out there. Right?

WikiLeaks sparks push for tighter controls.

The United Nations is considering whether to set up an inter-governmental working group to harmonise global efforts by policy makers to regulate the internet.

Establishment of such a group has the backing of several countries, spearheaded by Brazil.

At a meeting in New York on Wednesday, representatives from Brazil called for an international body made up of Government representatives that would attempt to create global standards for policing the internet - specifically in reaction to challenges such as WikiLeaks.

The Brazilian delegate stressed, however, that this should not be seen as a call for a "takeover" of the internet.

India, South Africa, China and Saudi Arabia appeared to favour a new possible over-arching inter-government body.

The internet was fine until this wickyleaks jack ass. Hell, the FBI thwarted quite a few terrorist plots the last year or so with the internet, it makes it so much easier to catch the dumb ones. I wouldn't go changing too much, might spook them out.

Not a fan of Wikileaks but definitely not a fan of the UN putting anything together that will regulate the Internet.

If the UN actually does this, it'll be interesting to see if fans of the IPCC will latch on to internet regulation as quickly as they did AGW bunk.

This seems like an over reaction knee-jerk to the wiki situation. Not a fan of this at all.

Dealing with individuals might work out for a government with the right resources, but gettin out in front of this problem as a whole is never, ever going to happen.

Folks in Washington need to deal with the fact that anything they do electronically could be leaked at any time.

The Wikileaks can be handled by changing laws about distributing classified information. No need to impact my porn habit.

Sarah Palin chastising foreign nationals for being un-American isn't enough for you?

I'd rather have a wikileaks palooza 24/7 for the next 100 years straight than the UN ever having any control over even the smallest aspect of my life.

Who is it on here that says the US has the most freedoms (in speech and press)? Because the FCC is ridiculous.
