Lawson and Ellington have yet to declare and both have gotten draft reports that put them exactly where they were last year when they decided to come back...

In all likelyhood they will declare...but if they didn't how ridiculous would UNC be next year...

Here's the probable lineup in that case...

G: Lawson - Drew
G: Ellington - Strickland(Fr)
G: Ginyard - McDonald(Fr)
F: Thompson - Henson(Fr)
F: Davis - Zeller

You'd have basically the same backcourt with Ginyard back and a more experienced and physically talented frontcourt than last year...

I know this isn't a UNC board and I'm going to be accused of being a bandwagoner...but can anyone deny that team would be scary good?

I know that Hansborough is not the best basketball player on the planet, but I do think his presence allowed NC to play actually set up the half court offense when they needed to. I wonder if they will be as consistent in that particular area without him.

I'm not taking away from Hansbrough...but I look for Davis and/or Thompson to fill the role you're talking about...

As much as Hansbrough accomplished I still think Davis is head and shoulders more talented than him

IF Lawson and Ellington returned, they would be hands down the best team in the nation... BUT it's not going to happen. Still, they'll be a Top 10-15 team all year without them.

I thought all year that they would be gone the second the season was over...

But...here it is less than a week before the deadline....their draft stocks are both right where they were a year ago when they decided to come back...you have to think they're at least considering coming back...

But in the end I'd be shocked if they did come back...

Still...them waiting so long got me to thinking about how ridiculous that team would be if they returned

I figured each of their stocks would've gone up. Ellington stopped disappearing in games and Lawson had his best year. If I picked 1-8 and needed a PG, I'd definitely consider Lawson even though he's a little short.

IMO...this is pretty much the only major problem scouts have with him...

And it absolutely blows my mind...

Look at the PG rankings for this years draft on ESPN....Lawson is 8th....

And there are several I can't believe are ahead of him...but one that really stands out is Brandon Jennings...

This kid goes to Europe for a season and gets his ass handed to him...but still he's supposedly a better NBA prospect than a guy who nobody at the collegiate level could guard...

And why...because of 3-4 inches...give me a break...

Well...that's my rant....I understand(but still don't get) the whole 'potential vs. proven comodity' argument....but it never ceases to amaze me how that argument seems to favor the potential side so often

Yeah I know what you mean. I was surprised too that Jennings didn't really slip after doing nothing in Europe. Lawson's a great ballhandler, improved his shot every year, and knows how to push the ball and get to the rim. IMO he's better than Ray Felton, who was a lottery pick.

Agreed...but both<<<<<<competition in the NBA

With that being the case...wouldn't you take the guy who's proven his ability versus a guy who you have to assume has the ability but hasn't shown in yet?

They are playing it safe by waiting until the last possible second before declaring. You never know what might happen. Injury? Arrest? Whatever. You don't want to be stuck in a situation where you can no longer return to school. Remember they already tested the waters last year so they can't remove their names once they declare this year.

You mean the line of thinking that would say you should take Randolph Childress instead of Kobe Bryant or Emeka Okafor ahead of Dwight Howard? Not a big fan. If you can't project what a player is going to become with a good degree of certainty you shouldn't be an NBA personnel guy.

I understand...the feeling is that Lawson maybe has peaked and Jennings hasn't even begun to reach his potential...

Risk vs. reward is definitely in Jennings favor...

On a simiar note...what do you think Lawson's shortcomings(no pun intended) are other than his height?

I'm still not completely sold on his shot. He's still got to add five feet of range to be a legitimate three point shooter in the NBA. He's also not that great a passer.

So what do you think about the thread title question?

UNC...better/worse than in 08-09 if those two are back?

That's likely true but few have been as productive as TH.

I still think UNC will be good...the problem will be that the only true PG they have is a servicable at best Larry Drew...

And the only playmakers they'll have in the backcourt will be freshmen...

Of course they will be stacked in the post...and the possible addition of John Wall could aleviate the PG and backcourt playmaker issues
