Dyron Nix's passing got me to thinking about the most underrated and overrated players in UT basketball history because I always thought Nix was underrated by UT fans for some reason (maybe quality of teams he played on was a factor). I have decided to rate my top 4 most underrated and overrated players below and I was born in 1978, so anyone who remembers further back please feel free to post.
Underrated:
1. Tony White - awesome player, but doesn't always seem to get the respect he deserves.
2. Dyron Nix - a dynamic scorer, who was really a prototype for what you see in the NBA today, yet seems to often get left off fan's top 20 lists. (RIP VFL.)
3. Ron Slay - also left off a lot of top 20 lists, but was SEC player of the year and a very good college player. Surprised he didn't find any success at the next level.
4. Wayne Chism - a very good low post player, who could also step out and make the mid-range jump shot and 3. Always seemed to be overlooked due to Lofton, Bradshaw, Prince, Smith (Tyler and JaJuan), but a very good player in his own right.
Overrated:
1. Dane Bradshaw - I know I will get ripped for this, so let me start by saying I had the chance to meet and talk to him for a while and he is a super guy and I always loved the way he played. He really was a glue guy, who left it all out there, but to say he was an all-time great I have never been able to quite agree with.
2. Marcus Haislip - his potential always exceeded his actual production in my opinion. His NBA career seems to bear that out too.
3. Charles Hathaway - Baby Shaq never lived up to the hype.
4. Steve Hamer - cannot believe he makes some people's top 15-20 lists. He was at best a serviceable center on some bad teams.
I also hear names like Bill Justus for underrated a lot, but again he was before my time. Old timers please feel free to chime in.
