I'm an older vol fan that spends more time at church talking about the vols than I should but here goes. I've been overwhelmed by the season start for the vols. I've never seen a vols team that is so balanced on all sides of the ball. I know we have had 2 tune up games and 1 ranked team so far. Obviously we have crushed all opponents so far. Niko is all they promised and Sampson is running wild. Our real season obviously starts against OU. I think we will beat them if we play half as consistent as we have so far. I know we can't win 10 games at once. The vols have to defeat the opponent that is in front of them. Except for the South Carolina game a few years ago, I've never seen a Heupel team fall apart. Actually my favorite Vol team had the Hooker to Hyatt hookup and I absolutely loved Joe Milton and follow him in the pros but this team so far is out of the galaxy. Just some uneducated thoughts from an old fan who just loves the vols. The days of fearing Georgia State and Troy might be over this year.

Good take! Hard not to be excited right now. What I love about these Heupel teams is how likeable they are. It makes watching even more enjoyable when the players and coaches are so positive and high character (unlike UGA which has very unlikeable coaches and players).

Our star players are even very humble. My wife had Sampson’s jersey last night at the gate; he was shocked to see a non Kamara jersey. Idk that some of these guys know just how good they are or they just were raised right to be humble. Seems like we have a very good core group of guys this year. There’s some swagger but there humility and focus as well.

Teams won't have their players on the field wearing wrist bands with our signals and plays on them this year as happened in the South Carolina game you refer to.

Yep, no way USCjr should ever manhandle us like that, ever!

The only difference I see is the weak schedule now that NCSU has been completely exposed. Last years team would have done equally well with this schedule. I think we have a very talented team on both sides of the ball that has played 3 exhibition games to get themselves ready. I have not seen Nico under real pressure, receivers against tight man coverage, the rushing game against a competent defensive line, or the opposing QB with time to throw the football. I am guessing we be effective against all the above, but I have not seen it yet. We will see all of these things this weekend, then we will know for sure.

Being a realist here...
Its still REALLY hard to tell how good this team is at this point. We have played some really bad teams, including NCST. OU "should" tell us more, but we have yet to be tested. At all.

My wife made the comment that "they seem really together" on the field. She said "I have never seen them play so well together". I have to admit she's right. Everybody is taking care of their assignments and they are playing really well. She asked me if I have ever seen them play like this and I replied "yes, 98". That 98 team almost had a manifest destiny to go undefeated. I'm not mixing the kool-aid just yet but things are going to get very interesting.

I'm not positive NCst is a bad team. They have talent. I believe the biggest issue for them is playing together. Lot of transfers and sometimes that takes time. They are likely an 8 or 9 win team in that conference IF they can come together.

Okay, I've tried to refrain from comment, but let's get real here. Our schedule to date has been very weak. Nothing but cupcakes. This weekend things get serious. OU will be a legit opponent.....first one of the season IMO. Saturday will tell us if this team is for real or a pretender. Until proven otherwise, I think it's an 8-9 win team.

I became a Vol fan when I started school at UT in 87.

By far the best Vol team in at least two decades. And only a handful appeared to be this good during my entire time watching. Some of the 90s teams were exceptional. And early 00s.

Peyton was a generational player. But Nico has more physical talent (significantly). And I think Peyton would agree. Now, time will tell if Nico becomes a BETTER QB. But, damn, my money is on YES.

I’ve never seen a Vol football team execute like this (and maybe not another college team).

Let’s see what happens in Norman. But, I see nothing that makes me think it will be any less impressive.

This is reminding me very much of the rise of Vitello’s baseball program. I am more excited than ever.
