unmanned drones and "playstation mentality"

only if they were carried out by regular U.S. armed forces operating with proper oversight and respect for the rules of war.

"Thus, rather than using drone strikes, U.S. forces should, wherever and whenever possible, conduct arrests or use less-than-lethal force to restrain," he said.

in short, be the only one playing by the rules and expose your troops to harm instead of using technology to your advantage. Are jets the next thing to be eliminated?

Sorry, but I am ok with using drones and fighting a battle away from the battlefield when the alternative is putting more us troops in harms way.

Nothing will come of it... but they're asking for the CIA to stop drone strikes as the system of reporting is far more, lets say, discreet if existent when the CIA is involved vs. the standard military.

I.E. a CIA drone wouldn't be officially delegated by or accountable to the DoD or JCS (and House) whereas a standard drone flown by the Army, Air Force or Marines would be.

Also, clearly the UN Investigator has such insight and wisdom into the "nature and rules of war" that he should be teaching at the US Army or Naval War College.

Everyone in my old G/J-2 could have benefited from his obvious experience in the matter.

You can't put the genie back in the bottle. This is the future of warfare. People have said the same sort of things about the increasing detachment from combat since the invention of gunpowder.

Yeah, it'd be like Napoleon filing for the Spanish guerrillas to change their tactics because they weren't favoring an open fight.

Find an outright strategic or tactical strength and exploit the crap out of it. UAV's are cheaper and more manageable. They are the dawning future of a new form of warfare.

I know 3 Cal-Berkeley grads, and they all know how to drop a great F-bomb.

actually I meant the author of the report. Seems he's from the Cal law school where another distinguished member of our board also went...

Now that you mention it, all 3 of my Cal-Berkeley acquaintances would agree with that link.

1) Why would operating a drone from a building in Iraq or Afghanistan reduce the chances of a "playstation mentality" any more than running it from Nashville? Running the drone remotely is the same wherever you do it in that respect and so the argument is nonsense.

2) I did not realize that the CIA could run drones. I thought it was purely military (with the CIA perhaps giving them intelligence on potential targets).

3) The alternative is worse. Sure there is risk of collateral damage with drones, but I have to think that such accidents would be far more frequent and significant with the use of even our best targeted but manned weapons.

They're offended that it changes the moral dilemma of sending troops into harm's way and makes our decision similar to those being made by guys like bin Laden, who sends out folks about whom he cares not one lick.

The CIA, along with DARPA, has been operating and testing drones of various sizes and capabilities since the mid 80s as far as I know.
