I would assume these guys didn’t use their heads as weapons?
Not too many times.

I remember when we weren't allowed water in July and August practices.
Change is good when it saves lives and makes people safer to live life after football.
They'll improve the product so they don't look like pumpkins on their heads.

I posted about this before. If they think they are an effective safety measure, how can they not wear them during games?

I think it does not matter if their safety effectiveness is proven or not. The ppl that have big $$$ to lose if college football keeps getting softened to the point of losing eyes/$$$. They will virtue signal with anything to keep the money rolling in. Just as long as ppl think their doing something to make it safer. They don't want to go to tag football and lose millions.

A safety with the Buffalo Bills, Kelso, used to wear one during games. It was slightly different, but painted to look like the helmet.

I could be 100% incorrect, and I'm only speculating, but I think the idea is you wear them during practice to reduce the number of hits to the head over time. I'm not sure how practices are now, but back when I played we went full speed. Maybe the idea is that it lessens the chances of CTE by reducing the overall number of blows to the head? Like I said, I've often wondered this same thing and its just my theory.

One argument I hear against even using them in practice is it gives guys a false sense of security because those head shots don't impact as much so that when it gets to game time and the cover is not there they still play as if it is...

Stay tuned - someone will come up with a shell, pad, or suspension system like the one jeff1vol pointed out and it will become standard equipment for certain positions.
It's all evolution.

Yeah I’ll say it. If they would all learn how to tackle properly, they wouldn’t need the helmet pads. Today, players are taught to lead with their heads and try to knock the opposing player down. Why? I sure don’t know.

I also don’t know if they’re required as opposed to optional. I’m not sure if there’s any research that supports their effectiveness, although intuitively you would think they would provide some protection.
