wonder what would have happened had the small boat approached a warship?

If it was a small craft then a .50 did it's job and more. Unfortunate if these guys were just ignorant fisherman. Whole things seems a bit fishy...

Without reading the article...I know warning shots were fired. It's part of the ROE..escalation of force. If they are simple fisherman and didn't get the hint that maybe they should go another direction...nothing you can do but take them out.

The U.S.N.S. Rappahannock is an underway oil resupply ship, meaning it is full of fuel, no way we are letting anyone get close and trying to spill all of that into the gulf. And just fyi, since the USS Cole attack we have people in the ports and one of the things they do is make sure fisherman et al, know not to go near any of our ships.
