Someone also mentioned in another thread that we were talking to Thomas D Woods as a possible relpacement for Washington. Can anyone confirm that?

This quote seems a little off though coming from ainge, home of the 20ft out of bounds pass:

"There's only so much coaches can do," Ainge said. "We need to put it upon ourselves to not hold, to make good decisions, to catch all the balls we should, and if we make some great catches, then so be it. One thing we're going to address in the offseason is catching every single pass we should and completing every single open pass we should."

As per the Tennessean: UT speculation: Dr. John Mark Hancock, whose column appears each week on TriCities-Sports.com, took credit for breaking the news that Randy Sanders would step down as offensive coordinator at UT, and says a slew of other coaching changes on the staff are in the works.

"We broke the story about the major coaching changes that were afoot in Knoxville last week,'' Hancock wrote on Nov. 7. "Few were openly predicting any staff changes publicly until our story was released online.''

What's next, according to Hancock, who claims to have a "very reliable source'' in the UT athletic department?

Running backs coach Trooper Taylor, who, according to Hancock, has fallen out of favor with the staff, particularly defensive coordinator John Chavis, will be out, and wide receivers coach Pat Washington and offensive line coach Jimmy Ray Stephens will "either resign or be terminated.'' Secondary coach Larry Slade will retire at the end of the season "due to health reasons,'' Hancock says.

Hancock wrote that Chavis and defensive line coach Dan Brooks are the only coaches "certain to retain their jobs.''

Hancock even claims to know who will replace the departed coaches. He says former UT linebacker Dale Jones will be the new special teams coach, former South Carolina Coach Sparky Woods, currently on the Alabama staff, will be the running backs coach, and former UT receiver Thomas Woods will be the wide receivers coach.

do a google search on John mark hancock. You can leave off the Dr. as he has a J.D. degree and is a disbarred attorney per the google search. I think you can toss crap against a wall a few hundered times and eventually one will stick. To me, credibilty is important, even to journalism, credibility is a stong issue with this one.

Sounds like Fulmer is throwing his assistants under the bus. If this was nou UT there would not be an assistant wanting to coach under Fulmer.

Well with the call for blood and the fact that Fulmer's locked in with big money for quite some time, the only ones left to hang in the noose are the assistants. Someone has to take the fall and since Fulmer is protected by money the little people are the ones to fall.

But as with many good teams it's usually having good assistants that make the good coaches. I think that is what is saving Tuberville now. He pulled in good people and let them do their thing with slight oversight. Fulmer needs to take notes on that. I know he's more paranoid of hiring good talent and fearing they'll steal his job but at this point he's on the verge of losing it anyway. He can either get the good people in to steer this ship right or risk the powers that be to boot him with continued mediocre performances.

Dale is now at Appy state. They just one their first round game in the D 1AA play off. he would be a great add to the staff. A tennessee boy with Orange blood. No one other than maybe Al Wilson ever loved being a Vol more than Dale.
and he has the same fire as Al Wilson. Let's hope this is true that he is going to be on the staff.

That would be an especially good hire if we lose Trooper... Someone else to bring enthusiasm.

I hate when the players say the coaches aren't at fault. They really have no clue. We are 5-6, are we supposed to just keep everything the same?

I agree. Spurrier, for example, was/is known for paying his assistants well, even to the point of giving out of his own pocket. Florida was paying Stoops $1 million as DC and he was really the difference for them. When Stoops left it showed. Spurrier again has assembled a strong staff @ SC.

True, the players have never been coached by anyone else, so they don't know how big of a difference a coach can make, and what they do better.

Basically what I hear in that article is nobody knows what is wrong with UT. The fans and powers that be want to put the blame on the coaches and the players say the coaches are not at fault for their sorry play. hmmmm.
That would mean that the players don't listen, don't follow instructions or just don't give a damn. Now, to me, this means that no one is DEMANDING 110% effort or committment to the team. That is a leadership and discipline problem. Like it or not, leadership and disclipline starts with the coaches and captains and ends with the players. Let's say Ainge is right and the coaches are not to blame. Then Rick Clausen and the other captains should take the heat, not for playing like high schoolers, but for not holding their teammates responsible for their poor performance and effort. If some of the players are upset at the coaching changes, I think it is a good thing. Maybe then they will realize that there are consequenses when they don't play to their potential. Where is Al Wilson when you need him?
