I am hopeful that we end up with 1 or 2 USC o linemen as I predicted. It fits our greatest need.
Where do we have the most glaring needs?
Center? Right Tackle?
In terms of coaching I will not belabor this but we have an OL coach who kids know can get them to the NFL if they have the talent and the work ethic.
Our depth chart today looks something like this:
LT 71 Dallas Thomas 6-5, 295, So.
76 Daniel Hood 6-4, 275, Fr.
LG 75 JerQuari Schofield 6-6, 331, Fr.
63 Kevin Revis 6-2, 285, Fr.
C 77 Cody Pope 6-6, 290, Jr.
52 Victor Thomas 6-3, 292, Sr.
Darin Gooch
RG 74 Jarrod Shaw 6-4, 331, Sr.
60 Carson Anderson 6-2, 280, So.
RT 70 JaWuan James 6-7, 313, Fr.
73 Chase Phillips 6-3, 275, Fr.
If you want to see why USC players might see opportunity, look not only at replacing every single starter, but look at the fact that our starting tackles are underclassmen and we have a freshman starter going into the SEC schedule!
Darin Gooch was brought in from JC to play center and at 300+ and 6'2 he physically may not have that far to go from contributing.
Helping depth will be walk on Blake McAmis a walk on from Bradley county who could well follow in the footsteps of our last walk on OL starters the Sullins twins.
None of them could be angry about getting tested veterans in from USC to protect our new QB and help us win over the next two years.
Unlike skill position players, OL almost never have the development to be drafted very high early in their college career. Your highest drafted OL are almost always seniors. The last exception I can think of at UT was Cosey Coleman and even after as great of a sophomore and junior year as you can have, he fell to the second round. If you want to be drafted as an OL with the most guaranteed money, it is wise to develop lots of experience in college before you leave.
What does USC have in terms of OL?
LT 75 Matt Kalil | 6-6, 290, So., 1V
RT 70 Tyron Smith | 6-6, 270, Jr., 2V starter
backup 72 Martin Coleman | 6-5, 315, Jr., SQ
LG 77 Kevin Graf | 6-6, 315, Fr., SQ
68 Butch Lewis | 6-5, 300, Sr., 3V starter
RG 78 Khaled Holmes | 6-4, 305, So., 1V
59 John Martinez | 6-3, 275, Fr., SQ
74 Zack Heberer | 6-5, 300, Sr., 3V starter
Center 61 Kristofer O'Dowd | 6-5, 300, Sr., 3V starter
50 Abe Markowitz | 6-2, 280, So., SQ
67 Michael Reardon | 6-5, 275, Jr., 1V
Coleman, Reardon and Smith all look like they would be good pickups. They have some injuries in the past but all would provide us with excellent depth at positions where we have needs. The fact that it would also be somewhat crushing to USC is just a bonus.
People keep saying that they will have no shot at a national title if they come here. That is not a certainty. It is a certainty that if they stay at USC they have no shot at a national title, or any kind of bowl game. I have read some people saying that players would prefer not to go to bowl games unless it is the National Championship. The players I knew were pretty excited about the gifts and festivities surrounding BCS bowls other than the National Championship and even the great gifts from the Citrus and Outback bowls. They may not be fired up to head to Memphis, but they were happy to head to Florida or Texas.
Come to TN, help us win some games, get away from the taint of the cheating and the drama and get a fresh start in a place where you are needed and can play in front of passionate fans who will cheer for you all the way to the NFL.
