I'd take KO in a heart beat if Pearl left. That's just me, though...

I wouldn't. As great of a defensive coach as he is... I'd like someone who can teach both. Getting rid of Pearl and going to O'Neill is going from one spectrum to the other. You need both to win it all.

I don't see that as true - Pearl isn't very good at teaching offense either.

not half court offense. But he continually has one of the highest scoring offenses in the SEC and nation. Their style of play are on the extreme ends from each other. No need to jump from one extreme to the other when the best way to win it all is to have a balanced offense and defense.

Being able to teach one is better than teaching none.

How much of that does Pearl coach/teach, though? It just seems to me that the lack of attention that Pearl places on defense allows the players to 1) score more baskets because the other team doesn't have to hold onto the ball long to score and 2) run and gun because they tend to stay in transition, not setting up much on either end of the floor. I will admit that we saw things slow down a bit this last year, but that just meant that we needed a half-court offense we didn't have.

I would trade Pearl for KO in a heartbeat...

Kevin O'neill over Pearl? O'neill never took us the NCAA tournament, had 1 NIT appearance and lost first round, and his never finished hire than 5th in the SEC east division and his 3 year tenure capped it off with 3 straight losing seasons. Yeah bring back the glory days!!!!!

What did the program look like when he got vs. when he left?

Jerry Green should thank KO for handing him a sweet 16 team.

Why do you have to interject logic? You know very well that context is irrelevant here at VN.

I'm getting a good laugh thinking about what it would have looked like with Bruce Pearl coaching Steve Hamer, Damon Johnson, and Shane Williams.

Wade Houston (65-90, .419)
1989-90 16 14 10 8 T-4th
1990-91 12 22 3 15 T-8th
1991-92 19 15 8 8 3rd (E)
1992-93 13 17 4 12 6th (E)
1993-94 5 22 2 14 6th (E)

That's the record O'Neill inherited before he started coaching. No wonder he only had 1 NIT appearance in his 3 years.

O'neill's record over 3 years was 36-47 so how is that any better than Houston's? Then he goes to Northwestern and spends 3 seasons with a record of 30-56. His last season was 5-25. Pearl won immediately with kids that were not his. Now he is winning with his recruits, even though we had a down year this past season compared to our current expectations. "IF" Pearl can recruit the right balance of talent, he will win a championship. I will take the proven winner all day long over a coach with a consistent losing track record.

Hat,
What was the major difference in O'neill's roster in his last season with only 5 wins, vs. the roster Jerry Green had handed to him the next season where he won 20 games?

So you consider the past few years glory? That's laughable...

Bruce Pearl has been a PR king for UT, he has not however been a great coach. There is a difference.

Been a fan since I was in middle school. Loved the Wade Houston era solely because of Allen. Liked Jerry Green he was a winner. Pearl is a winner, promoter and a showman who knows how to bring attention to the program. I never said he was the best X's and O's coach or the most disciplined coach around, but I do like what we have at Tennessee currently.
