Does anybody else think that espn has overrated USC big time for this upcoming season?

It's hard to give a team a low ranking after they've only lost two games in three years (and maybe just 3 losses in four years?). True, they lost much of their talent, but their recent record I think merits this ranking.

Yeah, at this point I think you have to leave them in the top 5 until they prove otherwise.

I don't think they lost much talent. Their 2nd and 3rd stringers are pretty talented.

They do have good skill positions, but I wouldn't expect another backfield like they had. They also lost alot of experience. Their OL took a big hit as well.

They didn't lose much talent? I think Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, and Lendale White are pretty good.

Yeah, they are. I'm sure the ones who replace them will be pretty good, too. I don't think I remember hearing Leinart and Garrett's names much when Carson Palmer and Mike Williams were there. I'm not comparing them to the normal team losing talent. I'm just saying they are a "reloader." And with Pete Carroll, that's much more concern for their opponents than Fulmer "reloading."

Carson Palmer had one good season at SC. Leinart won two National Championships, a Heisman Trophy, and played in the BCS Championship Game in his other season. I'll take Leinart's college career every day.

Me too. That's not the point.

Bush and White won't be replaced easily. They lost 2 or 3 other top RBs to academics and injuries and may be forced to play a true freshman at RB.

They won't be easily replaced. But Pete Carroll doesn't only recruit studs, he develops them. Their D has dropped off a bit, but they have about 6 or 7 LB's that will probably be studs.

I think their D should be good, but they will have mistakes due to inexperience. This will hurt them against ND and Nebraska especially but it should slide against the Pac 10 teams since those will likely be shootouts.

Just to clarify, 4 in 4 years.

However, they lose all their talent from last year. JD Booty is not the quarterback that Leinart was in replacing Palmer. Bush and White are two guys who are not replaceable, especially not by the guys USC has right now. Also, they return Jarrett on offense, however, how much of his success came purely from the attention that defenses had to show Bush and White, leaving him in one on one situations with Leinart throwing him the ball?

On defense, they lose half their secondary (which was spotty anyway,) and 7 of their top 10 in tackles.

And, maybe it is an important aspect of football, the OL only returns 2 starters.

My assessment, USC is extremely overrated thus far.

JD Booty and Mark Sanchez were both #1 QB prospects coming out of high school. Matt Leinart wasn't. However, neither of these guys will benefit from Norm Chow's tutelage. USC might be overrated, but I still say they deserve the benefit of the doubt at this point.
