Aaron Corp has a fracture in his tibula. Matt Barkley will take the first team reps. Anyone think this will mark the beginning of the Matt Barkley era? Anyone think that Jesse Scroggins is about to realize he made a very bad mistake???

He's probably going to be red-shirted. If Barkley is all he's proclaimed to be, he'll start for 3 years and go into the draft after his Junior year.

Barring other incoming recruits, Scroggins can step in as a RS Junior. He would still have 2 full years to start and he'd have 3 years in the system at the time of the start.

Ah, the PAC 10 can dream. Too bad Barkley will be the first team All PAC 10 QB and SC will still shred the pretenders in their league.

there has never in the history of the pac-10 (or the sec) been a first team qb who was a true freshman. i bet there haven't been many (if any) second team ones either. and considering barkley threw more INTs than TDs his senior year in HIGH SCHOOL, I very much doubt he will be the first. This has far more to do with carroll never thinking sanchez would go pro and sc not having a servicable backup after corp than it does with barkley being the greatest freshman qb of all time.

Keep dreaming. It'll make it even more delicious when SC steamrolls the Nine Dwarfs again.

at cal (12th ranked), at oregon (14th ranked), at ohio state (7th ranked), and at ND. 3 of those games are within the first 6 games of the season. this is the hardest schedule carroll has ever had. now say all those teams are massively overrated (which i'm sure you would argue). fine. i still put money on them losing at least 2 of those games with a true freshman starting on the road in one of his first starts. particurally considering the likes of lenhert, sanchez and booty, all who had years in the system before starting, struggled in these situations. now if corp is ready to go that is a completely different situation.

scroggins will still go to usc because it's usc and at this point it's like top dog or harvard for developing quarterbacks for the pros

Scroggins would be better off if barkley started this year. The sooner he plays, the sooner he leaves plus JS can redshirt his first year instead of trying to beat Barkley out.

I was getting ready to post the same thing. This is actually good news for Scroggins, unfortunately. :) I would say, this is definitely the beginning of the Matt Barkley era. Bad news for Corp.

If Barkley plays this year and Scorggins redshirts then all of a sudden he can be a two year starter so this is great news for Jesse.

Yeah, I bet Scroggins is loving the idea of sitting for two years before he sees the field. I'm also getting a kick out of people acting as if all Scroggins has to do is show up and wait his turn. Ask Mitch Mustain how that's turned out for him. It's not like SC is going to go "Oh, we've got Scroggins, who isn't even the best guy in an awful QB class. Let's quit recruiting that position." SC will sign a QB better than Scroggins in '11, '12, ...

Yeah, because Pete Carroll isn't going to go out and get a better player than Scroggins in either of thenext two classes.

i'm sure scroogins, like every other delusional 18 year old, thinks he will beat out barkley and corp when he arrives.

In all likelihood, Tennessee will too.

I feel the same way. I know JS will have tough competition whenever it's "his turn" to play. I'm just saying he probably feels better off if Barkley plays/starts this year and doesn't redshirt. Barkley starting this year would only reaffirm his commitment to USC. Either way, I don't see him changing his mind.

I agree, but at UT Scroggins will have a legitimate chance to establish himself as "the guy" next year. He'll just be one of a bunch of horses in the race at SC in '12 if things play out as we expect.

It would have been a much easier road without a doubt.

Seems like Scroggins is banking on a lot happening to get more than a year of playing time. If Corp and Mustain both stay healthy, Barkley might not have to take a snap this season. So he'd be red shirt if that is the case. If that's the case, Scroggins would have to be red **** and Barkley would have to leave after his junior season for Scroggins to get more than 1 year as a starter. How stupid would Scroggins feel if Barkley is red shirt, doesn't leave until after his senior year and Scroggins isn't red shirt. No playing time for Scroggins... Thinking about the bigger picture, I suddenly don't think we're out of the running for Scroggins. It's a long shot but Scroggins will have a chance to watch the season play out before national signing day. If Barkley ends up red shirting, why wouldn't Scroggins be worried about playing time at that point? I would be. Scroggins will know by national signing day if Barkley is going to be red shirt.
