With both teams struggling the way they are in conference play, a match-up between USC and UT would be a good draw for any bowl. Both teams travel well and the storyline would be interesting enough to get a lot of TV coverage.

Thoughts?

The most interesting story in college football next year is going to be to see how and whether Pete Carroll rebounds from the brutal overthrow of his dynasty. Remember how shockingly inconceivable it was when Stanford beat USC at home two years ago? Today, they got absolutely frogstomped at home by the Cardinal. That's not growing pains with a freshman QB; that's a wholesale and complete breakdown by the program.

Coaches almost never come all the way back from that. It'll be interesting to see if Carroll can.

Yeah, not sure why. Carroll's first ever loss in the month of November, strangely enough.

It's all based on recruiting. He needs the talent to win, which is part of what makes USC work. But I can say fairly comfortably that up until this year, USC has been without equal in terms of sheer talent on the field since 2002.

Pete Carroll will bounce back from this. The man is a legend at recruiting. Even though I'm happy to see USC down, they will be back next year I'm guessing. a USC / UT game would be awesome!

I think USC has been the best team on the field most of this decade, even when the beauty contest didn't work in their favor and they didn't get into the title game. IMO they were better than Florida last year, LSU the year before that, and probably Florida the year before that. Vegas certainly would have had them as favorites in any of those hypothetical matchups. A shame we never got to see any of them.

Either they come right back next year or the Pac 10 is wide open. It's really going to be interesting to see how Carroll walks through this minefield.

Of all the things I never thought I'd see posted on an SEC board...

Some great arguments for some type of playoff. I have to completely agree with your points.

Not all of us are provincial idiots. Is the SEC the best football conference in the country, year in and year out? Yes. Does that mean that, say, a Pac 10 team couldn't compete in the SEC? Hell no. IMO, USC has been every bit as good as the equally flawed SEC champs who have won the last three BCS championships.

I think USC would have stomped Florida (or Oklahoma) in a title game last year. And they had every bit as much right to being in the that game as either UF or OU. Too bad for Pete Carroll that that might have been his last really great team.

How do we not have a Pac Ten/SEC matchup in a bowl game? because of geographical differences? We do have planes now ya know..

The whole deep division tie in is another reason to hate the current system

This.

The only good thing I can say I think is "good" about the current system is it does give us a #1 vs. #2 game every year. Under the old "system" it was almost pure luck if #1 played #2 in their bowl game.

Other than that, I almost would rather go back to pre-BCS. At least back then, going to a bowl meant a whole lot more and outside of winning the SEC, where UT ended up was almost always a surprise. Plus you'd see a variety of opponents.

Be too hard and expensive for fans of both teams to travel unless it was held in Texas or someplace like that.

The PAC 10 has become much more competitive over the last few years, you have some very good coaches recruiting the same players USC is. Where USC was the clear cut option for the best recruits before, many of them are looking more widely and seriously at other options within the conference. That means more of them will go elsewhere, not because USC isn't a great team and program but simply because kids want to see the field and contribute.

I'm not saying USC is in trouble by any means, just saying that there are other schools becoming more and more attractive to young recruits, this alone will make the conference more competitive. Great for the PAC 10, not so much for USC.

Look, Pete still outrecruits the entire conference - to a very significant degree.

And there's no doubt that recruiting in the Pac-10 has gotten a ton more competitive since PC's reign of terror started - but the biggest key is that the coaching in the conference is starting to level the playing field a bit. Pete is going to keep winning big recruiting battles, and keep signing all the blue chips he wants - but there are coaches up and down the conference now that are capable of turning those 2 and 3 star guys that Pete doesn't get into certifiable beasts. His recruiting advantage will continue, but it will over time, matter less and less.
