UT Football. Is it plausible to believe we can win it all?

do i really have to do this again?

the SEC has two divisions, the East and West........they each have division winners, and they play for the SEC title.

and what made LSU better was they beat TN in the title game.

So beating them in the title game was harder than doing the same thing earlier?

You don't like the one and done scenario?

Do you like it for basketball?
I don't like the one and done in football regarding conference championship. We've now elevated that championship in lieu of the NC and weakened regular season results.

In hoops, I love the one and done nature of the tourney. The tourney's existence lessens the impact of early season losses and allows teams to improve over the course of the season and recover from rough outings. By tourney time, there should be no growing pains and the best team on the given night wins.

In either case, I don't think tourneys identify the best teams, except those that play series to win (NBA and MLB)

Or they could just take the top 8 teams, an do a playoff based on ranking. If the CUSA champ gets to the top 8, then let them in.

There is hardly ever a time when 8 teams have earned a shot at the title. I think just about every single year there are 4 teams max. A plus one system should work out. However, choosing which 4 teams get in is going to cause TONS of controversy. There's just no way to do it perfectly.

Because the coach would have to say to the team, "well we clearly had the best conference record, but if you don't win to day it was for nothing."

Pretty much,

That is their time to shine on a level that is completely higher than the regular season.

i'm sure that's the pre game pep talk. please let us know if you ever apply for a job on the UT staff....that way we'll know who to boo.

I would have had a very hard time giving the spot to a team that lost to Berkeley.

Actually, I think I was more upset with the way it was done. I didn't like that 1 computer poll outweighed 2 human polls enough to make a difference from 3 to 1.

Wouldn't that be the same at conf. champ time?

Any subjective cut line will cause controversy, but moving it high enough will eliminate most arguments about some team that was left out being able to win it all.

see...that right there........that's what determines who plays and who doesn't. and that's more fair than having conf. champions???

Fulmer's 07 pre game speech in Atlanta....

Myrmidons! My brothers of the sword! I would rather fight beside you than any army of thousands! Let no man forget how menacing we are, we are lions! Do you know what's waiting beyond that beach? Immortality! Take it! It's yours!

I am sure he will apply it to football.....

agreed. but how high do you move it?

12? 16? someone is always going to be on the outside looking in, saying "what about us?"

the fact is there is no objective way of setting up a playoff based solely on the rankings.

Everyone thought with Peyton staying the extra year.UT had a good chance to run the table. No one on this board can honestly say they saw the N/C coming in 1998.I know my % is out there but what's wrong with a little (alot of) optimism.Maybe the no names can step up or come in and play.I still think we can put points on the board with Ainge and our running backs.I know the big ? is wide receivers.I actually started with a lower % but my love for the Vols shot the % up.........I guess we will see.

So, the controversy for a 16 spot, or even an 8 spot, will be much greater than controversy for the 2 spot in a one game championship.

Although that is what is going on with the thread title, now it is completely off topic.

Anything outside of the top 10 would probably eliminate anyone without a legit shot at winning it all. Controversy at that stage is OK and expected - in fact it gins up interest. Controversy at the end of the playoff would be limited, which is where we'd like to be.

well, that's certianly not debatable.
