According to Jerry Palm, a self-confessed computer geek who charts these things, Alabama's strength of schedule is a factor that could keep the Tide out of the top two even if it wins out.
"Obviously, it would help Alabama if Tennessee were competent," Palm says, "but they will have played the top two teams in the other division, so it's not a complete disaster."
One of the reasons the Tide is third - and significantly behind No. 2 Texas in the point total - is the company it has kept on the field. Alabama has compiled a 9-0 record against teams with a combined record of 33-42.
Prominent among them is Tennessee and its 3-5 record. If the Vols had played up to their preseason pedigree, Alabama's victory over UT would've been a boost in the BCS. Instead, it is just another win over just another team.
